March Madness Picks: Xavier vs. Lehigh
- Updated: March 17, 2012
A pair of double digit seeds meet in NCAA Tournament betting action on Sunday night, where the Lehigh Mountain Hawks will look to become the first 15 seed to ever make it to the Sweet 16 when they take on the Xavier Musketeers.
The Musketeers have all of a sudden picked up a bunch of steam coming into the end of the first weekend of the dance, and now, they could be well on their way to the Sweet 16 and potentially beyond in a year that so much has been tumultuous. The X-Men knew that they were going to have to give it everything that they had to be able to make it to this point, and they got a great effort from Tu Holloway to get the job done on Friday night against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Against one of the best defensive teams in the country, Xavier’s star came up with 25 points on 10-of-15 shooting, and he made up for the poor performance by Mark Lyons. Dezmine Wells really chipped in with some great additions, scoring 14 points and ripping down 11 rebounds in the win and without his effort, it would be very suspect as to whether the Musketeers would still be alive to fight another day or not in this tourney.
If you didn’t know anything about Lehigh before Friday night, you surely know a thing or two about it by now. The team pulled off some tourney history, knocking off the mighty Duke Blue Devils to become the sixth No. 15 seed to ever advance into the Round of 32 here in the NCAA Tournament. It was a magical day for CJ McCollum, who is a tremendous sharpshooter from the outside. He came up with 30 point in the biggest game of his life, and he got help from both Mackey McKnight and Gabe Knutson, both of which made it to double digits in scoring as well. The Patriot League champs are definitely a scrappy bunch, and in spite of the fact that they were clearly not the more talented team against Duke, they were still good enough to win the game because of the ay that they dove all over the court for loose balls and challenged everything. Talent isn’t void on this roster completely though, and there is definitely some potential for some major history for the Mountain Hawks.
The Final Word: This is the type of game that the X-Men are going to really have the potential to struggle in. We know that the Mountain Hawks are going to be running on all sorts of momentum, and in the end, if Holloway and/or Lyons don’t come up with some big time games, there could be some massive problems. This No. 15 seed could come up with the upset again.
