March Madness Betting Preview: St. Mary’s Gaels vs. Baylor Bears
- Updated: March 21, 2010
St. Mary’s Gaels
(28-5, 21-10 ATS)
(27-7, 17-10 ATS)
Sweet 16 betting action concludes on Friday night, and as a part of the second day of festivities, the Baylor Bears will take on the upstart St. Mary’s Gaels. The West Coast Conference champions have pulled two mild upsets to reach this point in the tournament, beating #7 Richmond 80-71 and #2 Villanova 75-68. The Big XII representatives have taken out two double digit seeds, beating #14 Sam Houston State 68-59 and Old Dominion 76-68. This is the first time that these two teams will meet in college basketball betting action in their schools’ histories.
When you’re talking about St. Mary’s basketball, you have to talk about an offense that is a lot of fun to watch. There isn’t anything that this team can’t do on that side of the court. C Omar Samhan has arguably been the most dominant player in this entire tournament, as he scored 29 points against the Spiders and 32 against the Wildcats. This is also a team that isn’t afraid to shoot the three pointer. G Mickey McConnell has already nailed eight three balls in his two tourney games.
Baylor’s defense has really kicked it into gear in this tournament. The team already had a strong unit on the defensive end of the floor, allowing just 65.7 points per game this year, but allowing 63.5 points per game in the NCAA Tournament has been even better. That’s great news for a team that is incredibly talented offensively. G LaceDarius Dunn is going to be one of the best scorers on the court at all times, and he’s coming off of a 29 point performance against ODU.
The Gaels may be the trendy team in this tournament, but giving this Baylor team a week to prepare for this offense is going to leave the WCC champs at a huge disadvantage. Unless Samhan makes himself a true force on the inside and dominates this game, or unless someone is just shooting three point field goals like it’s nobody’s business, the Bears should march on to the Elite 8.
