March Madness Betting Preview: Michigan State Spartans vs. Maryland Terrapins
- Updated: March 20, 2010
Michigan State Spartans
(25-8, 12-20 ATS)
(24-8, 18-10 ATS)
The Sweet 16 and a probable date with the Kansas Jayhawks awaits for the winner of Sunday afternoon’s March Madness betting battle between the Michigan State Spartans and the Maryland Terrapins. Both the #4 and #5 seeds in the Midwest Bracket were given tough tests in the first round of this tournament, as MSU was pushed by New Mexico State in a 70-67 win, while the Terps finally disposed of the pesky Houston Cougars 89-77.
Thanks to G Kalin Lucas, the Spartans survived their first round scare. The leader of this team who had a major tournament a year ago got off on the right foot this year as well, scoring 25 points on 7/11 shooting from the field for HC Tom Izzo. Both F Durrell Summers and F Raymar Morgan reached double digits in scoring, while F Draymond Green ripped down 12 rebounds in spite of the fact that he failed to make a shot from the floor on the game.
It’s not usual that G Greivis Vasquez is the third leading scorer in a Maryland game. However, the Terps’ senior leader only shot 5/13 from the floor and scored 16 points in the ‘W’ over Houston. Both F Jordan Williams and G Landon Milbourne came up with major games for HC Gary Williams. Milbourne had 19 points, while Williams led the team in both scoring and rebounding with 21 points and 17 boards.
Unlike most tournament matchups, this one features two teams that know what it’s like to play each other. Maryland and Michigan State met in 2006 and 2008 in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, with the Terps winning in East Lansing both times 80-62 in ’08 and 62-60 in ’06. Sparty won the only recent NCAA Tournament meeting of these two schools 60-58 in the ’03 tournament. Today is the day that Vasquez shines for the “home team” in this battle. He’s going to be too much to stop for a Michigan State team that just looks like it has something wrong with the way that it’s playing right now.
