Spread: Memphis -4.5
Los Angeles comes into Game 3 of this best-of-seven opening round series holding a 2-0 edge, but it has to feel somewhat lucky after surviving a close call this past Monday in a 93-91 win as a 5.5-point home favorite. This was after it blew the Grizzlies out 112-91 as a 5.5-point favorite at home in last Saturday’s Game 1. The total has gone OVER in both games.
Look for the Clippers to go back the formula they employed in the opener that included a strong start and finish. They led by eight after the first quarter and with a six-point lead heading into the final quarter they went into a whole other gear by outscoring Memphis 37-22 to secure the win. So far in the two games, Chris Paul has put up 47 points with Blake Griffin adding 31 points and 13 rebounds. Los Angeles has shot 51.3 percent from the field but just 26.5 percent from three-point range.
In order to get back into this series, the Grizzlies are going to have to return to the form that had them ranked first in the NBA on defense in terms of points allowed. As opposed to the 102.5 point average in this series, they held opponents to just 89.3 points a game in the regular season. They will also need a big night on the other end of the court from the trio of Mike Conley, Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol. These three have combined to score 54 percent of the team’s points in the first two games.
Memphis is also going to have to do a much better job under the boards after pulling down an average of just 30.5 rebounds after averaging 42.7 a game during the regular season. Randolph led the team with 11.2 a game this season but only has a combined 12 boards in the first two games of this series. The Grizzlies were able to close the gap in Game 2 after getting doubled-up in rebounds 47-23 in the opener.
NBA Playoffs Free Pick
Give credit to the Clippers for taking care of business on their home court, but Memphis is just too good of a team to completely rollover in this series. Look for the Grizzlies to regain that defensive edge that led to a 32-9 straight-up record this season on their home court with a big win in Game 3 on Thursday night.
