Teams that are very likely to meet in the first round of the playoffs face off in a critical NBA betting showdown on Saturday night at the FedEx Forum, as the Memphis Grizzlies take on the Los Angeles Clippers.
The Clippers have to be upset that they are on this road trip right now at this point in the season. We know that next week, LA will be opening up the playoffs at home, but there is still a question as to whether that will come against the Grizzlies, the Denver Nuggets, the Golden State Warriors, or the Houston Rockets. The Clip Joint actually has the worst record of all of the teams in the 4-5-6 chase at 53-26, and losing this game probable ensures that they will be mired in the No. 4 slot instead of the No. 3. As most of the playoff teams are in the Western Conference, the Clippers are playing well, having won four games in a row and covering three of the four. The games haven’t been anywhere near difficult though, and the last two games in which LA faced some serious adversity, it was beaten by the Indiana Pacers and the aforementioned Rockets.
Memphis has a heck of a lot more on the line right now. The team badly needs to run down not the Clippers, but the Nuggets to ensure that it can start off the postseason at home instead of on the road. The Grizzlies are level with the Nuggs right now for what would be the No. 3 seed, and winning this game could get them to hop over Denver should it slip up at some point over the course of the rest of the season. Memphis has captured three games in a row and seven out of eight, and it is 5-2-1 ATS in those last eight games. The team has played flat out awesome defense all season long, but this stretch has been the best extended period that we have seen out of any team this year, as the Grizz are holding clubs to just 84.0 points per game since the start of this run on March 29th.
These are two of the best defensive teams in the Western Conference, and the oddsmakers have finally caught onto that fact. Five of the last six in this series, including three in last season’s postseason, have failed to reach the ‘total’. There really is no reason for this one to be lined in the 180s at this point, as it is going to be tough to see how either of these teams is going to end up getting to 90 points when push comes to shove. This should be the equivalent of playoff basketball at its finest. Memphis 89 – Los Angeles 85
