The Reds are in an excellent run of four consecutive wins and are without a loss in the previous 17 matches, so if anyone can hand the Citizens the first defeat this season in the Premier League, that would be Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp’s side is currently in the 4th position with 44 points, 18 behind Manchester City, and although they don’t have realistic chances to fight for the title, the Champions League place is up for grabs with five teams are in the mix for three spots that will lead to the elite European competition next year. The Merseysiders lost their best player as Philippe Coutinho joined Barcelona in a blockbuster move, and it will be interesting to see how they’ll cope without the Brazilian magician.
Liverpool played 32 games so far in the 2017/18, recording 18 victories, 11 draws, and three losses, with a goal difference of 81:37, which is 3.7 goals per contest on average. The Reds are unbeaten at Anfield this season, conceding just four goals in the last ten home matches and scoring 27 in return. They failed to find the net in front of their own fans on only two occasions – against Manchester United and West Brom as both games ended 0-0.
Mohamed Salah is the team’s top scorer with 23 goals in 29 appearances and the Egyptian superstar will become even more influential at Anfield following Coutinho’s departure, so he is a man to watch on this one. Roberto Firmino is following him with 16 goals to his name, while Sadio Mane added eight goals thus far. Salah, Firmino, and James Milner are leading the team in assists as they recorded eight dishes apiece, while Mane has six assists. Jurgen Klopp is without full-backs Nathaniel Clyne (back) and Alberto Moreno (malleolar), while Jordan Henderson (thigh) and Daniel Sturridge (muscle) are listed as doubtful for this clash.
The Citizens are on a great run of ten games without a loss since they fell short to Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League back in early December. They are still undefeated in the Premier League and are desperate to keep that record going, but will face a huge test at Anfield, so we will likely witness a fantastic clash between two high-scoring teams. Pep Guardiola’s side is at the top of the table with 62 points, 15 ahead of Manchester United and it looks like they cannot be challenged for the title. The only thing left to be seen is whether the Citizens will remain unbeaten in the next 16 Premier League matches.
Manchester City played 33 games in this campaign, recording 30 victories, two draws, and one loss, with a goal difference of 89:22, which is 3.35 goals per contest on average. The Citizens have four wins and a draw in the last five matches on the road, while they allowed just two goals in that span, scoring nine in return.
Sergio Aguero is the team’s leading scorer with 19 goals in 25 appearances; Raheem Sterling is following him on a goal-scoring chart with 18 goals to his name, while Gabriel Jesus has ten goals to date. However, the young Brazilian will not be able to help his teammates as he sustained a serious knee injury and will be sidelined until March. Leroy Sane and Kevin De Bruyne are the most creative individuals at Etihad with 12 assists apiece, while Davis Silva is right behind them with 11 dishes. Alongside Gabriel Jesus, Pep Guardiola cannot count on the left-back Benjamin Mendy as the Frenchman is suffering from a cruciate ligament rupture and is probably done for the year.
Liverpool vs. Manchester City – Betting Trends and Match Prediction
- Liverpool scored nine goals in the last three games at Anfield
- Liverpool scored a goal in the previous five Premier League matches
- Manchester City kept the clean sheet in four out of the last five Premier League games
- Manchester City allowed two goals in the last five EPL matches on the road
Manchester City is a slight favorite on this one but Anfield is not the ground where they found luck in recent years as they are without a league win in Liverpool since May 2003. The Reds won ten and drew four matches since then and I am sure they will try to take City’s scalp on Sunday not only because they are traditionally better at Anfield, but because they are seeking revenge after a 5-0 thrashing at Etihad earlier this season. That’s why I am backing the hosts to finally end the miraculous City’s run and I believe the visitors will leave Liverpool with their heads down.
MY PICK: Liverpool to win (+210)
