Pointspread: Houston -13
Total Line: 218.5
The Lakers started the new NBA season on a strong note with a 116-103 victory over the rival Clippers as 9.5-point underdogs, but it has been a shaky ride ever since with three straight-up losses in their next four games. This past Tuesday they were hammered by Dallas 123-104 as nine-point underdogs on the road. The total went OVER the 213.5-point closing line in that game and it has now gone OVER in four of their first five games.
Kobe Bryant remains out of the lineup while continuing his rehab from ankle surgery so it has been up to long time vet Steve Nash and Pau Gasol to try and minimize the damage until he can return. Gasol leads the team in scoring with 14.6 points and rebounds with 10.4 a game. Overall, Los Angeles is averaging 100.8 points a game, but it allowing an average of 109.0 points a game which is ranked 29th in the league.
Houston comes into this Western Conference clash with a 4-1 SU (3-1-1 against the spread) record in its first five games. Its only loss of the season came at the hands of the Clippers in a 137-118 beatdown as a five-point road underdog this past Monday. The Rockets bounced back with a 116-101 victory over Portland on Tuesday as two-point underdogs on the road. The total has gone OVER in three of the five games.
Dwight Howard signed with the Rockets this past offseason as a free agent to help bring home a title and this will be his first appearance against his former team. He has been a force under the boards so far with a NBA-high 14.6 rebounds a game and second on the team in scoring with 17.4 points a game behind James Harden, who leads the way with 25.2 points a game. Houston is ranked fourth in the NBA in scoring with an average of 109.4 points a game.
Free NBA Pick
Los Angeles has been able to score points with quite a few unfamiliar faces in their starting lineup, but they have had major trouble keeping their opponents from doing the same. Los Angeles could have trouble covering the 13-point spread against the high-powered Rockets on the road, but the free NBA pick in this one is OVER 218.5 points on the total line in a wild one.
Los Angeles vs. Houston OVER 218.5
