NBA Betting: New York Knicks vs Brooklyn Nets
- Updated: April 15, 2014
The rivalry that was supposed to be taking place between the Brooklyn Nets and New York Knicks hasn’t really turned out be as significant as some people expected. The Knicks are out of the playoffs this season, and may be going without their star player as they lineup for this 8:05 PM ET start in NBA betting action at the Barclays Center against Brooklyn, which has an opportunity to solidify its playoff seed in this game, but maintains as a major priority keeping its own key performers healthy.
The Knicks are 35-45 straight-up, which places them ninth in the East. They had briefly put together a late-season drive for the eighth and final playoff spot, but it was too little, too late. They have not done much better against the basketball pointspread, with a 36-44 mark. Since starting the season 10-21, Brooklyn has been one of the NBA’s best performers, currently standing with a record of 44-36, with the opportunity to clinch the #5 seed in the Eastern Conference with a victory. The Nets are 42-38 against the NBA betting odds.
So many people who thought this might be a great intra–city showdown with playoff ramifications for both clubs has been sorely disappointed. Not that VietBet customers will see skeleton crews on both sides, but it has become clear from listening to people from both camps that the “bragging rights” quotient on this game isn’t necessarily all that high.
None of the three meetings between these teams has been the slightest bit close. Back on December 5, when the Nets were really struggling, New York came into the Barclays Center and shot lights-out, hitting 16 triples and 57% from the field overall in a 113-83 pasting of Brooklyn, which served as a major embarrassment that brought some early heat on first-year coach Jason Kidd.
The Nets returned the favor on January 20, after they had made the adjustments that eventually turned them into a playoff contender. As a two-point favorite in NBA betting, they held the Knicks to 34% shooting at Madison Square Garden and hit 14 triples themselves, in the process of running away with a 103-80 victory in Manhattan. The third meeting was another blowout, as New York shot 60% from the field, compared to just 40% for Brooklyn, getting out to a 63-38 halftime lead and never looking back, cruising to a 110-81 laugher. So the Knicks have won two of the three meetings, both straight-up and against the NBA betting odds.
Getting revenge would be nice for the Nets and their fans, but there is already a certain degree of satisfaction – schadenfreude, if you will – with the idea that the Knicks are being left out of the post-season. There is a certain amount of optimism, but also more than a little uncertainty, among Knick fans about what the off-season will bring for New York. Carmelo Anthony, who has been playing with a very sore shoulder, is a good bet to sit out these last two games, as he prepares to test the market as a free agent. The Knicks have placed a very high priority on signing him, and Anthony ideally would like to stay, but as VietBet patrons have probably heard, the Knicks are aiming for a big splash in the free-agent market, not this summer but next summer, and ‘Melo may not want to wait around for that.
NBA bettors who have been following the Knicks know that Amar’e Stoudamire has had something of a revival, averaging 16.5 points per game since March 2. He has talked about his “return back to my dominant self,” and although there is a certain amount of hyperbole associated with that statement, he has been healthy and producing, and he wants to be a key person on this roster once again. However, there is also talk that after next season, Stoudamire will be headed to play pro ball in Israel.
At the moment, Kidd is trying to decide whether Mason Plumlee or Andray Blatche will be getting more playing time in the frontcourt rotation in the playoffs, which will likely pit Brooklyn against either Chicago or Toronto in the opening round. Basketball bettors should not expect a lot of playing time, if any, from Kevin Garnett in this game.
Brooklyn has been dominant on its home court of late, winning 16 of its last 17 games, and covering 13 out of 16 against the NBA lines. Perhaps a little extra focus comes from their and, especially if having the fifth seed means something to them.
