The 147th Kentucky Kentucky Derby will take place this coming Saturday at the classic Churchill Downs venue, and it will be the twelfth of a total of 14 races. The ‘Run for the Roses’, is listed for a 6:57 pm ET starting time, but we would suggest you tune in a little earlier. In any case, NBC will be providing a thorough coverage of the event beginning by 2-2:30 pm.

According to our latest research of the betting odds, after a very successful run in the recent Toyota Blue Grass Stakes, Essential Quality is situated at the top of the action preferences, with a current price of +250 money line.

Is Essential Quality the ‘Essential’ Bet?

There’s been a lot of talk in the racing circles about Essential Quality’s recent successes, and also about the reasons oddsmakers believe this 3-year-old to be the “top choice” for the upcoming Kentucky Derby 2021.

The colt, trained by the experienced Brad Cox, rose to the cusp of the betting charts after snatching a nearly perfect win at the recent Blue Grass Stakes (G2) at Keeneland racecourse. Apart from this victory, Essential Quality took additional Win trophies at the SouthWest Stakes, and both the Breeders’ Juvenile and Futurity races.

It appears as if the sheer weight and the contudency of Essential Quality’s successes during his latest outings have provided handicappers with sufficient confidence in his capabilities, pushing them to back up his ticket. On Tuesday’s draw, he was given the #14 post position, right next to Rock your World, the 2nd place in the betting odds.

Trained by Doug F. O’Neil, Rock your World pulled off a successful last-minute rush in the stretch of the Santa Anita Derby on April 3rd, and although his professional career is very short indeed (only having begun by January 2021), this dark-bay colt has held a strong presence in bettors’ predilections during his very few presentations throughout.

In a joint bid for the third pick we find Known Agenda, Hot Rod Charlie and Highly Motivated. The first belongs to Todd Pletcher’s school, and is considered to be slightly ahead of his immediate competition. He pulled off an unexpected win – vs race favorite Greatest Honor – at the Florida Derby on March 2nd.

Next is Hot Rod Charlie who won the Louisiana Derby -also in March-, finished 2nd at the Breeders’ Juvenile, and third at the Rober B Lewis’.

Last but not the least, Highly Motivated is one more interesting pick for your betting consideration: This 3-year-old – trained by Chad C Brown – recently finished last at the Gotham Stakes, and he also beat the aforementioned Known Agenda last September at Belmont. His one big problem? Neither Brown, nor his expected jockey, Javier Castellano, have enjoyed any successful runs at Churchill in the past.
