Head Coach Sean Payton is going to be back coaching his very first game with his New Orleans Saints since getting suspended for the entire 2012 season on Friday night when he guides the team into battle against the Kansas City Chiefs to start off the preseason.
Kansas City fans have to be looking forward to this one, as this is the start of what hopes to be a new, promising era of Chiefs football. Head Coach Andy Reid has taken over in KC, and he has a new quarterback with him as well in QB Alex Smith. Smith won’t play for long, but there is no doubt that his backups should be in good shape in this game. QB Chase Daniel is familiar with playing in the Superdome having done so with the Saints for a few preseasons, and he is going to want to get a bit of revenge on his former team if he can. QB Tyler Bray is also going to be making his professional debut. Though Bray freefell through the NFL Draft, he is still a quarterback with a big arm and the chance to really make it in this league, and he is going to be eager to prove that right away in Week 1 of the preseason.
New Orleans is going to surely be airing it out right away in the first preseason game of the campaign. The team is going to be chomping at the bit to get back on the field after a brutally disappointing 7-9 season in which the team finished tied for dead last in the NFC South. There are definitely some issues in this game, though. We know that Payton isn’t going to let QB Drew Brees and RB Darren Sproles play all that long, and it is our guess that the man that is going to be doing the majority of the heavy lifting in the backfield will be RB Travaris Cadet, who hasn’t had the best history playing at this level. QB Seneca Wallace is the new backup quarterback, and QB Luke McCown and QB Ryan Griffin are the men that are battling it out to be Brees’ third string quarterback. The Saints went 2-3 SU and 4-1 ATS over the course of the preseason last year, and it played some really uncharacteristic low scoring games, three of which featured 27 points or fewer.
Don’t be surprised if the Chiefs come to town and win this game. Teasers are popular picks in the preseason, and taking KC all the way up to +10 is a nice looking play. Still, if we are just in the market for a single play in this one, the Chiefs are our pick. The Andy Reid era will get started with an upset victory in the Bayou on Friday night.
