Spread: TCU Horned Frogs -32
The TCU Horned Frogs are a legitimate top team in the college football rankings and they have a realistic shot of making the playoffs although it seems to be slipping away as the season winds down. The Horned Frogs have to hold off the hard charging Baylor Bears who are behind them in the rankings although they beat the Horned Frogs earlier in the season.
This week the Horned Frogs will host the Iowa State Cyclones and nothing short of a dominating win will do if they hope to stay in contention. The Baylor Bears are taking on the top ranked Kansas State Wildcats and that win, if it were to happen, would be more impressive than a win over Iowa State. This puts a ton of pressure on the Horned Frogs to win and to win big.
The Horned Frogs come into this game with extra rest after dismantling the Texas Longhorns on Thanksgiving night. The Frogs have always been known as a team that has a stout defense, but this year the offense is one of the best in the country. TCU is averaging 45.9 points per game, second-most in the FBS and on pace to break the school-record of 41.6 set in 2010. Under new offensive coordinators Doug Meacham and Sonny Cumbie, the Horned Frogs are functioning at a faster pace and averaging four fewer seconds per play. This offense was able to put up 48 points in the blowout win against the Longhorns and will look to do the same against the Cyclones.
The Cyclones come limping into this game off a loss to the West Virginia Mountaineers. The Cyclones have just two wins on the season and have yet to win a conference game. They can play spoiler in this game which is basically all they have left to play for.
The college football betting trends are heavily in favor of the Frogs for this matchup. The Cyclones are 0-7 against the spread (ATS) in their last 7 games after allowing more than 280 yards passing in their previous game, 1-3-1 ATS when they go up against a team with a winning record and 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games following a straight up loss. The Horned Frogs are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games after allowing less than 20 points in their previous game, 20-9 ATS in their last 29 home games when they go up a team with a losing road record and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games after allowing less than 100 yards rushing in their previous game.
If the Horned Frogs want to go to the playoffs they will need a blowout win over the Cyclones and even that may not make a difference.
