USC quarterback Caleb Williams entered the 2023 college football season as the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, and he was also the clear favorite to win it again this season. That was the case through the first six weeks of the season, but everything changed in Week 7.
Williams threw three interceptions in a blowout loss to Notre Dame, and that game clearly showed that USC has some flaws. That team isn’t good enough to win the Pac-12 this season, and voters are going to go away from Williams after that performance.
The odds for Williams to win the Heisman are all the way down at +2000 after that game, and it’s time to start to look at the other top contenders. One name immediately comes to mind, but that doesn’t mean that this award is locked up.
Penix the Clear Betting Odds Favorite
Washington Huskies quarterback Michael Penix Jr. is the clear leader to win the Heisman Trophy now, as his odds have climbed all the way to -140. Penix Jr. was in the mix going into Week 7, and he played remarkably while Williams fell flat on his face.
Penix has thrown for 2,301 yards and 20 touchdowns this season, and he has done so while completing 72.1% of his passes. Not only has Penix been tremendous all season, but he has also been extremely clutch.
Washington just pulled off a miraculous win over Oregon on Saturday and now has the team in the Top 5 and Penix as the clear favorite to win the Heisman Trophy.
There is still a long way to go in the season, but Penix has put up numbers that are worthy of winning the Heisman Trophy and also leading his team to a national championship.
Trio of Top Contenders
There are three other college football quarterbacks that are next on the list to win the Heisman Trophy, and all three have odds set at +900 at Bookmaker. That is a ton of value at this time, and a couple of these quarterbacks are likely going to end up as a finalist.
Jordan Travis is one of the quarterbacks that have odds set at +900 to win the award, and he has Florida State back near the top of the country. Travis can make plays with his arms and his legs, and he is running over defenders.
J.J. McCarthy of Michigan and Dillon Gabriel of Oklahoma are also listed at +900 to win the Heisman Trophy this season, and both players have their teams in position to reach the CFP. There is still some work left to be done, but they could end up making a big move.
Time to Take Travis
Unless a majority of the voters already submitted their ballots with Caleb Williams name on it, he’s just not going to win the award this season. Drake Maye would be another great choice to consider, but his North Carolina team isn’t going to get enough wins on the biggest stage.
Now is the perfect time to bet on the Heisman Trophy winner, and it’s the perfect time to take a big shot. Penix Jr. might be the clear leader at this time, but a couple of losses would knock him down a few pegs.
Jordan Travis is putting up ridiculous numbers at Florida State, and he has gotten that program back on the map. He’s going to be a finalist and should be the top choice if Penix Jr. and the Washington Huskies slip at all.
