After the first weekend of the NFL playoffs are over with and with just the BCS National Championship Game left to be played, we turn our attention to the Sunday night bowl game in January, the GoDaddy Bowl, where the Ball State Cardinals will take on the Arkansas State Red Wolves.
The Red Wolves are seeming to go through the annual tradition of being stuck with an interim head coach for their bowl game, and this year is no exception. First it was Steve Roberts, who was fired at the end of the 2010 season, then it was Hugh Freeze, who left for Ole Miss, then it was Gus Malzahn, who went to Auburn, and finally, it was Bryan Harsin, who took the Boise State job when Chris Petersen left for Washington. John Thompson, the team’s defensive coordinator is going to take over for this game before Blake Anderson takes over next season. The Red Wolves were the co-Sun Belt champs this year in spite of all of their turnover, and they did so with a great running game headlined by a stable of backs. RB Michael Gordon, RB David Oku, and RB Sirgregory Thornton combined for over 300 carries this year, and QB Adam Kennedy had 514 yards on 147 rushes of his own. Kennedy threw for just 2,327 yards and 11 scores, but all of the production for ASU is clearly coming off of its rushing attack.
Ball State only just barely missed out on the MAC title this year, as it was beaten in a closer-than-you-think game against the Northern Illinois Huskies back on November 13th. The 48-27 final score doesn’t show just how out of hand that game ended up getting at the end when things were still awfully close. Take that game away, and what’s left is a Cardinals outfit which went 10-1 SU and 8-3 ATS to show for its work, and the one loss ended up coming against a team which ended up being a better-than-you-thought North Texas Mean Green unit. QB Keith Wenning has a great offense at his disposal. He threw for 3,933 yards and 34 TDs on the season, and he had three great receivers in WR Willie Snead, WR Jamill Smith, and WR Jordan Williams, who combined for 210 receptions, over 3,000 yards, and 31 TDs by themselves. RB Jahwan Edwards and RB Horactio Banks had over 1,500 rushing yards and 20 TDs combined to boot, making this one of the most feared teams to play against outside of NIU in the MAC.
Arkansas State is playing in the GoDaddy Bowl for the third straight season. The team is just 1-2 SU and ATS in its three all-time bowl games. Ball State has actually never won a bowl game in its history, and it has only come within one score of doing so just once in its history. The team is ultimately 0-6 SU and ATS in its six all-time bowl games.
