Sunday’s MLB betting action on TBS is set to be a good one, as the St. Louis Cardinals take on the San Francisco Giants in the final game of a three-game set.
This is about as disastrous of a situation as Manager Bruce Bochy could have possibly found himself in. His team had to play a doubleheader on Saturday, and neither of his starting pitchers in those games pitched all that well in the two losses. You can bet that he is just going to want to get out of the Gateway to the West as quickly as possible after this one is over with. Now though, he has to really tinker with his rotation and send RHP Chad Gaudin to the mound for this game. Gaudin hasn’t started a game since September of 2009, and he is going to be asked to throw as many innings as possible with really only five or six arms that are truly available in the bullpen after the double dip yesterday. Gaudin has pitched well this season, posting a 2.05 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP, but all of those innings came in relief. This is a much different situation for a man that is just trying to help nail down the fifth spot in the rotation now that RHP Ryan Vogelsong is on the DL for the next month or so.
The Cards are flying high after sweeping the doubleheader with ease on Saturday, and the team has now won six out of seven and eight out of 10 dating back to May 21st. They didn’t tax their bullpen yesterday after their two starting pitchers combined to hurl 16 innings, needing just two innings in relief to finish off the two victories in total. LHP Tyler Lyons is going to be making the third start of his career on Sunday, and this will be the first time that the hometown crowd at Busch Stadium gets a chance to see what he can do. Lyons has been remarkable in his first two starts, putting together virtually the same outing both times. In each start, he allowed just one run in seven innings of work, and he got the win in both circumstances. This is going to be a much more challenging game this time around though, knowing that the Giants are set to really start to hit the baseball after a frustrating day on Saturday.
The price on the Cardinals is just too high in this one. If we learned nothing else in the NLCS last season, it’s that we shouldn’t ever count the Giants out of any situation. Gaudin will find a way to pitch a few good innings, and if he can get the team to the sixth or the seventh without getting in too much trouble, he should get the win against a man that is set for a bad start.
