The Foals are the favorites in this one, but they are facing selection problems as a lot of players are missing due to injuries. Schalke is in a better position injury-wise, and their strong finish of the last season on the road is giving them hope they can get a positive result here. The match between Borussia Monchengladbach and Schalke 04 will take place at Borussia-Park on August 17th, 2019.
Borussia Monchengladbach vs. Schalke 04
Three-Way: 1: Monchengladbach +110; X: +250 Draw; 2: Schalke +250 at BetDSI Sportsbook
Spread -0.5: Monchengladbach +108; Schalke -118
Total 2.5 goals: Over -125; Under +100
Borussia Monchengladbach will be confident here after remaining unbeaten in the last six occasions in which they have started the new season at home (W4, D2). They conceded just one first-half goal across that period, and historically they have lost just one of the eight previous H2H games played on Bundesliga matchday one (W4, D3, L1).
The hosts scored the opener in all of those previous six home season openers, although only one arrived in the first half-hour. Gladbach netted six of their nine goals across those games in the 15 minutes either side of half-time and conceded three of four after the 66th minute.
However, Gladbach struggled at the end of last season, winning just one of their final five league games (W1, D1, L3). Indeed at home, they are winless in eight (D3, L5), conceding a first-half opener in seven.
Marco Rose will be without Jonas Hofmann (knee) and Florian Mayer (knee) while Lars Stindl is still recovering from his broken leg. Bunch of players is doubtful to face Schalke, though, as Mickael Cuisance (groin), Tony Jantschke (back), Fabian Johnson (foot), and Christoph Kramer (ankle) could be sidelined for this encounter.
- New signing Marcus Thuram scored Gladbach’s winner in the recent cup game
- Gladbach lost the first half 1-0 in five of their last eight Bundesliga home games
- Both teams scored in five of Gladbach’s last six home league fixtures
Schalke 04 have lost five of their last seven season openers when starting away (W1, D1, L5), with four of those losses arriving via a single-goal margin.
Furthermore, the visitors ended 2018/19 with only one victory from their last seven Bundesliga games (W1, D4, L2), and conceded the opener in the five games that didn’t end goalless.
However, they are unbeaten in their previous four top-flight road trips (W2, D2), albeit they conceded the opener in three.
New head coach David Wagner cannot count on Ozan Kabak (foot) and Rabbi Matondo (foot) while Nabil Bentaleb (groin) is listed as questionable to face Gladbach.
- Four of Daniel Caligiuri’s seven Bundesliga goals for Schalke last season came from the spot, plus he netted a penalty in the weekend cup success
- Schalke collected a total of just two yellow cards across their last three top-flight matches
Gladbach won four of the previous ten H2H encounters (D4, L2), including the last two while the Foals suffered only one home defeat to Schalke in this decade. However, the hosts failed to win over the previous eight matches in front of their fans, and the Miners are on a five-game unbeaten streak on the road. That’s why I am not brave enough to back Gladbach in this one, and I am going with a draw.
MY PICK: Draw (+250)
ADDITIONAL PICK: Even six of the last seven H2H meetings produced goals on both ends, only the previous tilt finished 2-0 for Gladbach in Gelsenkirchen. When it comes to games at Borussia-Park, each of the last seven produced goals on both sides, and I am backing BTTS in this one as well.
MY PICK: BTTS YES (-169)
