Last Updated: 2017-11-28
On Saturday, December 2, 2017, the 2-9 Georgia Southern Eagles take on the 2-9 Coastal Carolina Chanticleers at Brooks Stadium. This is a contest of two teams that are simply looking to end on a winning note. Georgia Southern won their first game of the year and won last week meaning that the nine weeks in between were all losses. Finishing the season with two straight victories would be a big boon for this team.
Coastal Carolina began the season with nine straight losses but had a dominating victory over South Alabama by 52 points to end the streak before defeating Louisiana by 10 last week. They have scored 86 points over the last two weeks, the same number it took them to reach in the previous five games combined.
Georgia Southern has gone 4-6-1 against the spread through the first 11 games of the season, however, they have gone 4-1 in their last five. In the last 12 games for the Eagles on the road, they are 3-8-1 against the spread. Georgia Southern has gone over in seven of the last nine games, including going over in four of the last five on the road.
Coastal Carolina is 4-7 against the spread this season. They have gone 1-4 against the spread in their last five games at home and have gone over in four of their last six games.

GEORGIA SOUTHERN EAGLES
It is easy to see why Georgia Southern has struggled so much this season. They are averaging 21 points per game while giving up better than 32 per contest. The Eagles do have an outstanding running attack, with six players having better than 108 yards rushing this season.
The leader is Wesley Fields, who has 781 yards rushing and five touchdowns. Fields is averaging 4.8 yards per carry and his second on the team with 162 attempts. His backup is L.A. Ramsby, who has rushed for 524 yards and scored five times this season.
Shai Worts is the quarterback and he is a dual-threat option but is much better passing than he is running the ball. Worts has rushed for 614 yards and three touchdowns the season but is averaging just 3.4 yards per carry. Through the air he has thrown for 872 yards and six touchdowns, completing 57.7 percent of his passes and throwing four interceptions and 137 attempts. Truthfully, the Eagles are much better when they are able to run the ball, and that will be a key for them in this contest.
On defense, Georgia Southern has recorded 18 sacks and picked off 15 passes this year. The team leader in sacks is Logan hunt who has 4.5, and Monquayion Brinson has proven to be an excellent cover corner, intercepting five passes this year.
COASTAL CAROLINA CHANTICLEERS
Like Georgia Southern, it is easy to see why Coastal Carolina is struggling to win games. The Chanticleers our scoring 23.3 points per game while yielding 35.5. That is also the kind of numbers that makes it easy to understand why they suffered a nine-game losing streak to start the season.
While the Eagles like to move the ball on the ground, the Chanticleers are a much more pass-oriented offense led by quarterback Tyler Keane. Keane has thrown for 1440 yards and 11 touchdowns the season. He is only completing 58.8% of his passes and estrone five interceptions.
Kilton Anderson has seen some time in games this season, even starting two, but his numbers are not an improvement. Anderson has thrown for 563 yards and five touchdowns but has completed just 43.5 percent of his passes.
The running game is led by Oshamar Abercrombie, who has 591 yards and five touchdowns. No other back on the team has as many as 275 yards rushing this season.
Coastal Carolina really struggles on defense, recording just 14 sacks, four interceptions, and five fumble recoveries. Marcus Williamson leads the team in sacks with 4.0, and Fitz Wattley has three interceptions to lead the group.
Eagles vs. Chanticleers Betting Lines
This is one of those games where most will not even give it a second thought, but this is an opportunity for both teams to end the season with a little momentum heading into next year. A chance to turn around a difficult beginning and turn it into a winning ending. Believe that both of these teams are going to be out here working hard for this victory. Georgia Southern has the slightly better team on both sides of the ball, and that should be enough for them to win by five or six points in this game. Take the under as the best choice.
My Pick: Georgia Southern -2.5 (-120)
Totals: Under 53.0 (-110)
