French Open Picks: Andy Murray vs. Simone Bolelli Predictions

The 2011 French Open betting festivities continue on Thursday on the clay courts of Roland Garros, and here at Bang the Book, we’ve got our tennis picks for the match at Court Philippe Chatrier between the top Brit in this tournament, No. 4 Andy Murray and an unranked Italian, Simone Bolelli.

Murray has seemingly always been a bridesmaid, but never has been a bride in the major Grand Slam events in his career, but he is in fine form now and hopes to better his best performance at the French Open this year, which was his quarterfinals performance two years ago. Murray is definitely significantly better off on the hard courts than the clay courts, as he has finished runner up at the Australian Open in two straight years and once at the US Open. Even on the grass at Wimbledon, he has a pair of semifinal appearances. In this tournament, he has only had one other opponent, Eric Prodon, who went away quickly 6-4, 6-1, 6-3. No one is really expecting to see Murray have any sort of struggles in this match either, but it doesn’t get much better than he was in that first match. He had 39 winners on the match and had a dozen aces against just a pair of double faults. Needless to say, if the Brit can keep this type of play up, there won’t be any doubt that he should get through this match without any issues.

Bolelli, ranked No. 126 in the world, has never been ranked in the Top 30 in his career, as he has only gotten up to No. 36, and that was back in 2009. His best Grand Slam finishes have all been here at Roland Garros, as he finished in the third round in 2008. Last year, he was a first round exit, and this season, he has already had to go through a heck of a push just to get to this point. Bolelli has already played three qualifying matches, and he won two of the three to get into this field. In his first match in the main event, he played a fantastic match against Frank Dancevic, a Canadian qualifier. Save for a dud of a third set tiebreaker, Bolelli was dominating in this match, winning 6-1, 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2. The Italian didn’t commit a single double fault in that match, and he had just a tremendous service percentage, winning 79 percent of his first service points and 76 percent of his second service points.

We know that Murray is winning this match, as he is -2750 to take it down. The question though, is whether he is going to end up beating the nine game spread that he faces on this day. We tend to believe that Bolelli is going to end up sticking in front of the number, and he might even be fortunate to end up picking up a set. That being said, our French Open picks for the second round are going to be on Simone Bolelli +9 Games.
