Free Wimbledon Picks: Tamira Paszek vs. Victoria Azarenka Predictions
- Updated: June 27, 2011
Victoria Azarenka is the top seed left in Wimbledon betting action on the ladies’ side of the draw, and she is going to try to move on to the semifinals of this event on Tuesday afternoon in Jolly Ol’ England when she takes on upstart Tamira Paszek.
Without a shadow of a doubt, this is the biggest match in the career for Paszek. The Austrian has never really had all that much luck in her career in Grand Slam events, going just 10-15 in her career before this tournament. Paszek has been a tremendous upstart in this tournament, as she is only ranked No. 80 in the world. She is just 60-69 in her career, and she hasn’t even won a million dollars in that stretch. This year, she was just 4-12 coming into this tournament, and she was knocked out in the first round of both the Australian Open and the French Open. Just getting out of the first two rounds against unranked Ayumi Morita and Christian McHale was an accomplishment for Paszek. However, her third round upset of the No. 6 Francesca Schiavone was clearly the biggest win that she has ever had. She took down the third tie 3-6, 6-4, 11-9 in one of the best matches of this tournament as well. In the fourth round, Paszek had minimal troubles with Ksenia Pervak, another upstart with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 triumph.
The door really has swung wide open for Azarenka. She has really watched her bracket open up with a slew of upsets around her. She was a doubles runner up in the Australian Open this year, but she has never made it past the quarterfinals in this event in either singles or doubles action. Wimbledon betting fans know that Azarenka was a quarterfinalist four times in Grand Slam events since the 2009 French Open, including in 2009 at Wimbledon. This really hasn’t been all that tough of a road to reach this point, and with some of the best players in the world already gone and out of the way, this match against the No. 80 ranked player theoretically should be another easy romp. The only ranked player that Azarenka has run into was in the third round against Daniela Hantuchova. That was also the only match in which the Belarus native was beaten in a set. Aside from that, there has only been one set in which a foe has won more than three games. The possibility is there that Hantuchova at No. 25 might be the best seed that Azarenka has to play in order to win Wimbledon for the first time.
We’ve already had a first time winner this year in a Grand Slam event when Na Li won the French Open. This really might be the first time for Azarenka. The star from Belarus is really due for her day in the sun, and though it has been a great run for the Austrian, this is where she is going to bow out. This is an easy play on Azarenka -800.
