The Chicago Blackhawks are the National Hockey League’s most popular and successful franchise and a perennial playoff favorite but so far this year the Hawks are off to a sluggish start as the attention of Chicago has been on the epic playoff run of the Chicago Cubs.
The Calgary Flames are off to a horrible start that could very well put them behind the playoff eight ball early if their course is not corrected in a hurry.
The Chicago Blackhawks will host the Calgary Flames on Monday night with a starting time on NHL Network at 8:30 PM ET.
Gully gets Rough Intro
Glen Gulutzan took over as head coach of the Flames and now understands why he has a job as the Flames have been absolutely awful with just one win in their first five games. Calgary ranks near the bottom of the NHL for goal scoring and 30th for the power play. The Flames rank 25th in the NHL for goals against and 20th for the penalty kill. It all explains why the record and fundamentals are so bad. Among the few bright spots for Calgary are right wingers Troy Brouwer and Michael Frolik who have three goals each.
Goaltender Chad Johnson has a 1.88 goals against average in three starts while Brian Elliott was really struggling with a 4.72 goals against average in three starts.
The Blackhawks split their first four games with two wins and two losses as the top scoring team in the NHL with the third best power play. Chicago has slipped noticeably on defense so far with a ranking of 23rd overall in the NHL for goals against and 30th for penalty killing. Left wing Richard Panik was off to an explosive start with four goals and one assist.
Goaltenders Scott Darling (3.00) and Corey Crawford (3.41) have posted subpar numbers so far but have not gotten a lot of help as the Hawks rank 20th in the NHL for shots allowed.
There is a good chance for a lot of offense and entertainment in this one since both defenses have been weak so far.
Calgary has been a terrible betting value on the road with just five payouts in their last 17 away games with four out of their last five away games going under the total.
Chicago has been a really bad overlay betting value at home with steep prices to boot. The Hawks have lost eight out of their last 13 games at home with just one out of their last 15 home games going under the total.
Chicago has won 15 out of their last 17 home games against the Flames with seven out of the last eight meetings in Chicago between the Hawks and Flames going under the total.
Chicago has won four out of their last five games against the Flames with 11 out of the last 13 games between the Hawks and Flames going under the total.
