A National League match-up will be featured in Major League Baseball betting action when the St. Louis Cardinals face the Atlanta Braves Monday night at 7:00 ET at Turner Field on ESPN. This Monday night game will be the first of a three game series with the Braves coming in as the ‘favorite’ to pick up the win.

The Cardinals stopped a two game losing skid against the Chicago Cubs on Sunday as they got a 5-4 win in the Windy City. Catcher Yadier Molina came through in the clutch hitting a single to bring in two runs in the ninth inning to give his team a 5-3 lead. It was just enough for pitcher Trevor Rosenthal to pick up his eighth save in as many tries. St. Louis needed that win to avoid being swept by Chicago and suffering its first three game losing streak. As one of the best defensive units in the league the Cards give up just 3.03 runs per game and that certainly came into play on Sunday as they gave up just five hits. Pitcher Shelby Miller will take the hill for St. Louis on Monday as he comes in with a 3-2 record and a 3.15 ERA. Miller was solid in his last outing giving up just three runs in 6.0 innings as he got the win over the NL Central leading Milwaukee Brewers. His job will be of utmost importance to keep the speedy Braves lineup off the base paths as much as possible in this game.

The Braves are now on a four game losing streak after suffering a 4-1 loss to the San Francisco Giants on Sunday. It marked the third straight game in which they failed to get more than one run on the board. Atlanta’s offensive woes find them ranked with the No. 29 lineup in the league as it scores just 3.30 runs per game. If the Braves can’t find a way out of this funk they’ve been in their chances at bringing home another National League East championship could be dwindling early in the season. They will send Aaron Harang to the mound in this game to try and get the ship righted as he has a 3-2 record coming in. Harang has a 2.97 ERA having given up just 25 hits in 36.1 innings of work this season. His last outing was one to forget as the Miami Marlins put up nine runs in just 4.2 innings as he got the early hook. Atlanta must use its speed to generate some runs and that means B.J. Upton, Justin Upton, and Jason Heyward need to find their way on the bases in this game.

The Cardinals seemingly have the upper hand as they come into Atlanta a team with something to prove on Monday night. We like them to jump out early on Miller and be able to hold onto the lead with their solid defensive play. Take St. Louis to get the win on the road and pick up a few extra bucks along the way by going for the ‘underdog’.
