One of baseball’s oldest rivalries will be renewed in Major League Baseball betting action when the Chicago Cubs travel to face the St. Louis Cardinals Monday night at 8:15 ET on ESPN at Busch Stadium. This has been a one-sided rivalry for some time now with the Cards getting the best of the lowly Cubbies on most encounters.
The Cubs lost three straight over the weekend to the Atlanta Braves to make seven losses in their L/8 games. On Sunday they fell to the Braves 5-2 as pitcher Edwin Jackson went 6.0 innings allowing three runs on six hits. Right fielder Nate Schierholtz was 1-for-3 at the plate and had the only two RBI’s for Chicago in the loss. The offense managed nine hits in the game, but left eight on base and struck out 14 times. On Monday the Cubs will send left hander Travis Wood to the mound who has a 4.75 ERA in 41.2 innings of work. Wood was manhandled by the Chicago White Sox in his last start lasting just 4.0 innings giving up eight earned runs on eight hits in an 8-3 loss. He comes into this one with a 2-4 record and he beat the Cardinals 5-2 back on May 2nd. The Cubs are just 6-21 SU in their L/27 contests on the road and 1-4 in their L/5.
The Cardinals lost two of three to the Pittsburgh Pirates in a weekend series as they managed to get a win on getaway day Sunday. In the first inning they jumped out to a 4-0 lead and held on to win 6-5 thanks to scoring two runs in the eighth. Pitcher Shelby Miller threw 5.1 innings giving up two runs on four hits for his fifth win of the season. The big first inning was powered by base hits, smart base running, and an error from the Pirates. Right fielder Allen Craig went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in the win. Monday’s game will start a 10 game homestand for St. Louis as it tries to catch up with the Milwaukee Brewers atop the National League Central. Left hander Tyler Lyons will take the hill for the Cards as he tries to get his first win of the year. He has thrown 21.0 innings with a 3.43 ERA and struck out 21 batters in five appearances. St. Louis is 1-9 in its L/10 games when following a win, which doesn’t bode well for them in this one.
The Cubs are due for a breakout offensive game and this would be the perfect time for them to breakout from the horrible weekend they had in Atlanta. Chicago took two of three games from St. Louis in a series played just over a week ago as it showed it can score some runs. We like the Cubs to get a win to open this series behind a good outing from Travis Wood and taking advantage of facing a starting pitcher who has yet to get his first win.
