After playing deep into the night on ESPN for Sunday Night Baseball, the New York Yankees are back in the national spotlight on Monday night when they host the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers maintained their five-game lead on the Kansas City Royals in the AL Central Division with their 4-0 win behind seven excellent innings from Anibal Sanchez. They also moved to within five games of the Oakland A’s for the best record in the AL. The Yankees, meanwhile, stayed five games behind the Baltimore Orioles in the AL East and moved to 1.5 games behind the Toronto Blue Jays, who lost on Sunday, in the AL Wild Card chase.

The Motor City Kitties will send All-Star Max Scherzer to the mound on Monday night. Scherzer will be vying for his league-leading 14th victory. He started the season 8-2 with a 3.05 ERA in his first 14 starts, but a disastrous outing against Kansas City right out of the All-Star Break, in which Scherzer gave up 10 earned runs in four innings, raised his ERA to 3.84. Since that awful start, Scherzer is a perfect 5-0 in seven starts with a 2.08 ERA and a 56/12 K/BB in 47.1 innings of work. The Tigers are 6-1 in those seven starts.

Brandon McCarthy has been a pleasant surprise for the Yankees since he was acquired from the Arizona Diamondbacks on July 6. Prior to the trade, McCarthy was one of the league’s worst starting pitchers with a 3-10 record and a 5.01 ERA in 18 starts. Back in the American League, McCarthy is 3-0 with a 2.55 ERA in four starts, though he has allowed three unearned runs in his 24.2 innings. Dating back to June 27, McCarthy’s last six starts have been quite good, as he has gone 5-0 with a 2.41 ERA over 37.1 innings.

This will be Scherzer’s sixth career start against the Yankees. He’s made at least one start against them every season he’s been with the Tigers, dating back to 2010. He’s 4-1 with a 4.08 ERA in those five previous starts, though his last two starts have been bumpy with seven earned runs allowed in 9.2 innings. The Tigers are 16-6 in Scherzer’s 22 starts for a profit of 7.22 units, which makes Scherzer the seventh-most profitable pitcher this season.

McCarthy will be facing the Tigers for the 17th time overall, but this will be his 10th career start. It will be his first start against the Tigers since 2012. Current Tigers have a sample size of 109 plate appearances against him with a .316/.385/.531/.916 slash line. The Yankees are 4-0 in McCarthy’s four starts for a profit of 4.18 units.

Free MLB Pick: Detroit

The Yankees only got 6.2 innings worth of combined work from their starting pitchers on Saturday and Sunday, which leaves the bullpen in a rather precarious position on Monday night. The Tigers are coming off of a dominant three-game sweep over the Colorado Rockies and they’ve been a great team to back when Scherzer is on the hill.
