An Interleague battle will be featured in Major League Baseball betting action when the Oakland Athletics travel to face the Atlanta Braves Sunday night at 8:05 ET on ESPN at Turner Field. This will be the rubber match of a three game series with the A’s coming in as slight ‘favorites’ on the board.
The Athletics fell to the Braves for the second straight night in a 4-3 heartbreaker on Saturday night. Oakland Pitcher Sonny Gray lost his fourth consecutive start giving up four runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings of work. First baseman Steven Vogt notched his eighth homerun of the year and catcher John Jaso added his ninth of the season in the loss. The A’s have just a half-game lead in the AL West with the Anaheim Angels nipping at their heels. Newly acquired left hander Jon Lester will get the ball for Oakland in this primetime start as he tries to help his team avoid a sweep. Lester is 3-0 since joining the Athletics as he has given up just six runs in 21.2 innings of action and been the recipient of 22 runs of support in those wins. Oakland comes in with the league’s top scoring offense averaging 4.83 runs per game and has posted a 33-29 SU record away from home. Third baseman Josh Donaldson is putting up All-Star numbers again this season leading the team with 25 homeruns and has knocked in 84 RBI’s thus far. The ‘over’ is an impressive 7-2-1 in the A’s L/10 on the road.
The Braves are trying to put together a string of wins to remain in the National League playoff hunt and they were successful thanks to some timely hitting on Saturday. Third baseman Chris Johnson went 3-for-4 at the plate knocking in two RBI’s including the eventual game-winner in the sixth when he singled to bring home left fielder Justin Upton for a 4-2 lead. Pitcher Julio Teheran earned the quality start going 6.0 innings allowing two runs on four hits to run his record to 11-9 on the year. Atlanta will counter with a lefty of their own in Mike Minor for this Sunday night showdown as he comes in with a 5.33 ERA in 104.2 innings of work this season. Minor put up a quality start his last time out as he lasted 6.2 innings scattering eight hits and allowing three runs in a 4-2 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Braves have been a horrible ‘underdog’ of late cashing in just one of their L/8 chances. Atlanta has won the last three meetings with Oakland by a total score of 16-7 as it looks for the sweep in this contest.
The Athletics actually score fewer runs-per-nine against left handed pitching and that could be a good sign for Minor who needs to lift his game for the Braves down the stretch. We expect this to be a very close battle with the A’s outlasting the Braves to avoid the sweep. Oakland is 10-4 in its L/14 Interleague games and that bodes well for it to get the job done with the league’s highest scoring offense coming to its aid for a big road win.
