MLB Betting Odds From 5Dimes Sportsbook

Probable Starters: STL: Lance Lynn (15-10, 2.73) v. ARI: Wade Miley (8-12, 4.35)

Moneyline: St. Louis -145

Total: 7.5

The St. Louis Cardinals have had problems shaking off the Pittsburgh Pirates and the division is still up for grabs entering the final weekend of the season. The Pirates play early on Saturday afternoon and the Cardinals play late, so this game could have a much different feel depending on Saturday afternoon’s results. The Cardinals are already in the playoffs, but they certainly want to enter the second season with some momentum.

Lance Lynn will make his final regular season start for the Cardinals on Saturday night at Chase Field. Lynn has been outstanding this season with a 15-10 mark and a 2.73 ERA. Over his last 13 starts, Lynn has a 2.17 ERA. Surprisingly, he’s just 5-4 and the Cardinals are just 7-6 in those outings. He has also given the Cardinals plenty of length by pitching into the sixth innings in all 13 starts.

Wade Miley became the de facto ace of the Arizona pitching staff when Patrick Corbin needed Tommy John surgery. He struggled and regressed after two very solid seasons. Miley is 8-12 with a 4.35 and has not had an ERA below 4.00 all season long. In the National League, that’s a very disappointing season. Miley had thrown the ball well with a 2.59 ERA in a seven-start span prior to his last outing, in which he gave up six runs in 4.1 innings at Colorado.

Lynn is 2-0 with a 2.52 ERA in his career against the Arizona Diamondbacks in six appearances, four of them starts. He allowed two runs over six innings in his lone start against them this season. The Cardinals are 19-13 in Lynn’s 32 starts for a profit of 3.46 units.

Miley is 1-2 with a 4.26 ERA in three career starts against the Cardinals. He gave up three runs in 6.2 innings in his lone 2014 start. The Diamondbacks are 13-19 for a loss of 6.60 units in Miley’s 32 starts.

Free MLB Pick: St. Louis Cardinals

The Cardinals are a heavy favorite in this game against a team just looking to finish the season out. There’s a lot of uncertainty in the Diamondbacks clubhouse with a new management team and the impending firing of Kirk Gibson. The Diamondbacks are 21 games under .500 in August and September and that’s the mark of a team that is done.

Matchup: Oakland Athletics at Texas Rangers

MLB Betting Odds From 5Dimes Sportsbook

Probable Starters: OAK: Jeff Samardzija (5-5, 2.92) v. TEX: Derek Holland (2-0, 1.31)

Moneyline: OFF

Total: OFF

The Oakland Athletics have limped to the finish line and they won’t have a lot of time to get things figured out before the postseason starts. The A’s went from an American League World Series favorite to fighting for their playoff lives in the final weekend against a dead-and-buried Texas Rangers team that leads the AL in losses. The slate is wiped clean once the regular season ends, but the A’s have to be worried about their situation. The A’s are in, but barely.

Jeff Samardzija has to be worried about what sort of hex has been put on him. Samardzija is 7-12 between the Cubs and Athletics with a 2.88 ERA. Samardzija has a 1.38 ERA this season in games where he did not factor in the decision. One pitcher since 1914 has a lower ERA with 10 or more no-decisions and that was Roger Clemens in 2005. Six of Samardzija’s 14 starts for the A’s have been quality starts with a no-decision or loss. The A’s are 1-4 in Samardzija’s last five starts despite his 1.22 ERA and 37/2 K/BB ratio.

Derek Holland fought his way back to the Major Leagues after undergoing microfracture surgery in his knee after an incident suffered while playing with his dog. Holland will be making his sixth start of the season and it’s clear that the Rangers could have used him this season. He’s 2-0 with a 1.31 ERA and he has pitched into the seventh inning in all five starts. He faced Oakland on September 17 and the Rangers are 4-1 in his five starts.

Samardzija is facing the Rangers for the second time in his career. He threw eight shutout innings against them earlier this season and, not surprisingly, took a no-decision in that game. The A’s are 8-7 for a loss of 3.20 units in Samardzija’s 15 starts.

Holland is facing the A’s for the 18th time overall and 14th as a starter. He’s 5-4 with a 3.26 ERA. He is 0-0 with a 1.42 ERA this season against the A’s. The Rangers are 4-1 in Holland’s five starts for a profit of 4.22 units.

Free MLB Pick: Texas Rangers

Why would the A’s score for Samardzija when it really matters? Holland has thrown the ball extremely well and the A’s are down to 24-25 against left-handed starters. With a big price to lay on the A’s, why not take a shot at the underdog in this one?
