The Cleveland Indians will try and eliminate the Boston Red Sox on Sunday afternoon in Game 3 of the ALDS in Boston on TBS. The Indians dominated the Red Sox in Cleveland winning 5-4 and 6-0 to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series. The Red Sox have to hope that they get a good start from Clay Buchholz on Sunday. Buchholz didn’t have a good season overall but he did pitch well down the stretch with a 3-0 record in the last month of the season. He will be opposed in Game 3 by Josh Tomlin who went 13-9 for Cleveland this season. Let’s look at Game 3 and MLB picks.
Probable Pitching Matchup – Tomlin vs. Buchholz
Tomlin pitched really well down the stretch as his ERA in the month of September was 1.40. He was 1-1 in his last three starts with a 1.74 ERA.
Tomlin knows that the series is not over yet. “We can't get complacent and we're not," Tomlin said. "It's about going out there and handling our business, trying to win a game and not let them back in it. We know how good they are and so we can't get complacent and just kind of go through the motions and expect to win."
Buchholz went just 8-10 this season with a 4.78 ERA but he did have a 3.14 ERA in September. He was 2-0 with a 1.42 ERA in his last three starts. The Red Sox are up against history as only 7 times in 53 tries has a team won a Division Series after losing the first two games. "We're the Boston Red Sox," Buchholz said. "We know how good we are and we're here for a reason."
The Indians were really good at home this season but on the road they struggled, scoring just 4.06 runs per game compared to 5.58 runs per game at home.
The Indians are 1-4 in the last 5 meetings in Boston. The Indians are 4-0 in their last 4 games vs. a right-handed starter. The Indians are 13-3 in their last 16 games following an off day. The Indians are 4-1 in their last 5 vs. the American League East. The Indians are 14-5 in Tomlin’s last 19 road starts.
The Red Sox are 4-1 in their last 5 home games vs. a right-handed starter. The Red Sox are 5-2 in their last 7 home games. The Red Sox are 5-1 in Buchholz’s last 6 starts. The Red Sox are 10-22 in Buchholz’s last 32 home starts.
The Over is 6-1-1 in the Indians last 8 games vs. a right-handed starter. The Over is 4-1-1 in the Indians last 6 road games. The Under is 9-3 in the Indians last 12 vs. the American League East. The Under is 5-0-1 in Tomlin’s last 6 starts overall. The Under is 12-3-1 in the Red Sox last 16 overall. The Under is 6-2 in Buchholz’s last 8 starts overall. The Under is 4-1-1 in the last 6 meetings.
These two teams are overdue to explode offensively and neither Tomlin nor Buchholz scares anyone so I will take this game over the total.
