The Los Angeles Dodgers visit the Washington Nationals on Saturday afternoon in Game 2 of the NLDS on FS1. It could be a pitching duel as the Dodgers are expected to send Rich Hill to the mound while the Nationals counter with Tanner Roark. Let’s look at the matchup and MLB picks.
Probable Pitching Matchup – Hill vs. Roark
The first postseason start for Hill will come on the road in Washington. Hill was really good for the Dodgers as he had a 1.83 ERA in six starts with the team since coming over from the A’s. Hill nearly ended up pitching for the Nationals this season but Washington didn’t have room in their rotation for him early in the season. “Who knows?” Hill said. “If more things developed here, then I possibly wouldn’t be in this situation right now.” Hill was 12-5 this season with a 2.12 ERA.
Roark will be making his first career start in the playoffs and his numbers show he deserves the Game 2 start. He was 16-10 on the season with a 2.83 ERA. He faced the Dodgers in late in June and allowed three runs in 7.2 innings. Roak said he loves pitching at home but wouldn’t have minded starting in Los Angeles “It’s obviously great to have the support of 42,000 fans at home,” he said. “But also having a sellout crowd back in LA, too. I love to pitch in front of the hype and all that stuff like that and pitch in front of everybody. It doesn’t matter. It’s either or.”
The Dodgers were nothing special on the road this season going 38-43 while the Nationals were 50-31 at home in the regular season. The Dodgers were just 14th in the league in runs scored this season at 4.5 while they were 5th in fewest runs allowed at 3.7. The Nationals were 8th in the league in runs per game at 4.7 while they allowed 3.5 runs per contest, 2nd in the league.
The Dodgers are 4-1 in the last 5 meetings in Washington. The Dodgers are 5-1 in their last 6 Saturday games. The Dodgers are 15-5 in their last 20 vs. the National League East. The Dodgers are 5-16 in their last 21 playoff road games.
The Nationals are 4-1 in their last 5 games vs. a left-handed starter. The Nationals are 12-5 in their last 17 home games.
The Under is 5-2 in the Dodgers last 7 playoff road games. The Under is 4-1-1 in Hill’s last 6 starts overall. The Under is 4-1 in the Nationals last 5 games vs. a left-handed starter. The Under is 9-4-1 in the Nationals last 14 home games.
Roark has been one of the most underrated pitchers in the league this season and the Nationals are an excellent home team so I will take Washington to get the home win on Saturday.
