The Boston Red Sox will try and even the best-of-five series against the Cleveland Indians on Friday in Game 2 of the ALDS on TBS. The Indians pulled out a 5-4 win on Thursday to take a 1-0 lead in the series as their bullpen held down the high-scoring Red Sox. The Red Sox turn to David Price to try and even the series while the Indians will be sending Cory Kluber to the mound. Let’s look at the matchup and MLB picks.
Cleveland Indians -109, total 7 over
Probable Pitching Matchup – Price vs. Kluber
Price was 17-9 with a 3.99 this season. He struggled down the stretch as his ERA since August was 4.35 but he did lead the league in innings pitched with 230. He has not faced the Indians since Opening Day when he held them to two runs and five hits.
Price has not been a good pitcher in the postseason as his record is 2-7 with a 5.12 ERA. "I want to have that really good postseason game," said Price, "I know that I'm capable of doing that."
Kluber was 18-9 this season with a 3.14 ERA. He was 2-0 in his last three starts with a 4.15 ERA. The Indians had to use Andrew Miller and Cody Allen for multiple innings on Thursday so it could be that neither is available for this game. "I was joking with Kluber," Tribe manager Terry Francona said. "I told him he's on a tight 165-170 [pitch count]."
This is a key game for Boston to win because only 6 of 48 teams that have fallen behind 2-0 in the division series have come back to win. The Red Sox are 2-8 in the last 10 meetings in Cleveland. The Red Sox are 14-3 in their last 17 Friday games. The Red Sox are 11-3 in their last 14 road games vs. a right-handed starter. The Red Sox are 0-4 in their last 4 road games. The Red Sox are 5-1 in Price’s last 6 road starts.
The Indians are 4-0 in their last 4 overall. The Indians are 4-1 in their last 5 Divisional Playoff games. The Indians are 19-7 in their last 26 home games vs. a left-handed starter. The Indians are 42-16 in their last 58 home games.
The Indians are 2-5 in their last 7 games vs. a left-handed starter. The Indians are 16-5 in Kluber’s last 21 starts.
The Under is 5-1 in the Red Sox last 6 overall. The Under is 8-3 in the Red Sox last 11 road games. The Under is 7-3 in the Red Sox last 10 road games vs. a right-handed starter. The Over is 7-1 in Price’s last 8 road starts. The Over is 5-1-1 in the Indians last 7 overall. The Under is 3-1-1 in the last 5 meetings.
The Red Sox need this game but it is hard to trust Price in the postseason. The problem with taking Cleveland is that their bullpen was used up on Thursday. I will avoid a side and just take this game over the total.
