Over the course of the first two rounds of the playoffs, the Rangers really didn’t look or feel like a superior team against the No. 7 and No. 8 seeds in the East. That being said, this is the first time that New York has figured it out and really has dominated at times. No, it hasn’t been every single period that the Rangers have looked like the better team, but when you look back at it, it is hard to argue that they don’t deserve the 2-1 series lead. For the second time in this series, New York is coming off of a dominating 3-0 victory, and in both Game 1 and Game 3, it has come up with three goals in the third period. Of course, what we have to be wary of when we are looking at the Rangers is that they are now 3-0 in Game 1s, 0-3 in Game 2s, 3-0 in Game 3s, and 0-2 in Game 4s. That means if recent history continues, this series is going to be level going back to the Big Apple.
There have been so many periods along the way in this series in which the Devils have been completely lackluster. In the end, they just aren’t going to be able to win this series if they don’t end up getting more attempts on goal. Sure, they ended up with 36 shots on goal, but were there really that many remarkable attempts? Of course, Game 3 was a game in which Henrik Lundqvist was just awesome, and there are games in which that is going to happen. Of course, it was really suspect to see Martin Brodeur getting outplayed in really all three of these games. However, it’s still about the offense. Where has Ilya Kovalchuk gone? He was the hero in the second round against the Philadelphia Flyers, and he has just one goal and no assists in the three games against the Rangers. Zach Parise has just one assist and no goals, while Travis Zajac has been totally shut out on the scoreboard. These are the players that have to carry this team into the Stanley Cup Finals, and the hope that we have is that they haven’t just run out of gas for the rest of the season.
New York Rangers @ New Jersey Devils Game 4 Pick: The Devils are going to be good enough to win this game, and we think that they are going to be in better shape in this game than the Rangers. New York just doesn’t feel like a team that has the ability to put New Jersey away, and we think that this is going to be a tied series going back to Madison Square Garden later this week.
