These are the two best teams in college football and they deserve to be playing for the trophy. Neither the Clemson Tigers nor the Alabama Crimson Tide had a problem in the College Football Playoff semifinals and now the race is on to prepare for the biggest game of the season
By virtue of going 13-0 and winning the MAC, the Western Michigan Broncos are in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Even though the Broncos are undefeated, the Big Ten runner-up Wisconsin Badgers are favored by more than a touchdown at most betting outlets.
The Iowa Hawkeyes and the Florida Gators are two proud Power 5 Conference members and their matchup at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida is the first college football game of the 2017 calendar year. Florida is favored by just shy of a field goal and the total is barely on the plus side of 40.
The Penn State Nittany Lions and head coach James Franklin have had a remarkable turnaround after being written off as dead halfway through the season. Franklin was on a seat that was blazing hot with calls for his firing but he is now considered a National Coach of the Year contender.
The Auburn Tigers showed enough improvement this season to call off the dogs and turn off the heat on the seat for head coach Gus Malzahn, who has staved off the doubters, at least for the time being. On the other side, the Oklahoma Sooners shrugged off a bad start and a horrible home loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes early in the season to finish strong as Big 12 champions although they had no real argument for making the College Football Playoff.
The Washington Huskies are officially out of their generational misery of being out of the national spotlight since the retirement of the late great Hall of Fame head coach Don James, who led them to proud UW program to the 1991 national championship. In just his third year on the job head coach Chris Petersen has put the program back into elite status.
The LSU Tigers began the season with head coach Les Miles and dreams of a national championship due to a loaded roster that was full of experience. They end the season with a new head coach in Ed Orgeron and a future of questions and doubts, especially on the offensive side of the ball
For the second time in the College Football Playoff era, the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Clemson Tigers are in the Final Four. Ohio State won the inaugural College Football Playoff National Championship and Clemson finished runner-up with last year’s entertaining loss to Alabama. Those two teams will meet in the second semifinal, which is the Playstation Fiesta Bowl at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
There’s never a good time to have to defend the triple option, but 11 a.m. on New Year’s Eve seems like a pretty bad time to have to do it. That’s the task at hand for the Kentucky Wildcats as they take on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in the Taxslayer Bowl at Everbank Field in Jacksonville, Florida.
The bowl season always presents some fascinating contrasts of style. The Sun Bowl on December 30 between the North Carolina Tar Heels and the Stanford Cardinal fits that description. These two teams will make the trip to El Paso for a game that will challenge both defenses in very different ways.
The South Alabama Jaguars will be going bowling for only the second time in their history which began in 2009 as a fledgling college football program with no history and plenty of dreams while the Air Force Falcons are no strangers to post season bowl games and have a program stepped in a tradition of history and success.
The Georgia Bulldogs had a less than satisfying season under first year head coach Kirby Smart, who was celebrated as the Savior of the Program after taking over for Mark Richt, who was considered low energy and out of ideas while the TCU Horned Frogs are also limping into the Liberty Bowl after one of the most disappointing seasons in the head coach Gary Patterson era.
The Capital One Orange Bowl between the Florida State Seminoles and the Michigan Wolverines could be one of the best matchups of the postseason. These are two highly-motivated, supremely-talented teams getting together at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida. Michigan is favored by about a touchdown.
You can bet that Husker Nation will travel en masse to the Country Music Capital of the World. This may be one of the livelier environments during the bowl season and it could be a lot of fun. Tennessee is a field goal favorite with some extra juice out there in the betting market for this Big Ten vs. SEC matchup.
The Oklahoma State Cowboys fell short as usual in the annual Bedlam matchup with their arch rival Oklahoma Sooners which cost them the Big 12 Conference championship and relegated them to yet another second place finish that is becoming all too familiar and too often for Billionaire Booster T. Boone Pickens and Cowboy fans.
The Arkansas Razorbacks are coming off an inconsistent season that included the highs of beating the SEC East Division champion Florida Gators and the lows of ugly losses to the Auburn Tigers, LSU Tigers, and the pathetic Missouri Tigers. The Virginia Tech Hokies showed dramatic improvement under first year head coach Justin Fuente as they made it all the way to the ACC Championship Game where they lost a close one to the Clemson Tigers 42-35 and have nothing but upside showing for their future.
The South Florida Bulls are coming off the glory of a ten win season but that success has cost them their head coach, Willie Taggart, who cashed in on the
Former Big 12 rivals will meet in the Lone Star State for the Advocare V100 Texas Bowl in Houston, Texas on December 28. The Kansas State Wildcats are still a member of the Big 12, but the Texas A&M Aggies took the plunge and joined the SEC in the West Division. It probably comes as a surprise to some people to see the Aggies lined as just a two-point favorite going into the bowl season.
The Indiana Hoosiers will make a bowl game appearance in consecutive years for the first time since 1990-91 when they played in the Peach Bowl and then the Copper Bowl. The Utah Utes are the opponent and the game is the Foster Farms Bowl at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, which hosted Super Bowl 50.
The closer we get to the end of 2016, the better the bowl games get. The Russell Athletic Bowl is a sneaky good matchup between the West Virginia Mountaineers and the Miami Hurricanes at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida.
