The last full points event until the New Year is this weekend’s RSM Classic at Sea Island Resort on St. Simons Island in Georgia. There are a lot of locals in this event and those guys are sure to be popular with the DFS crowd. Being local hasn’t led to as many good performances as you would expect on what is a tricky course. There are a lot of hazards and some marshy rough areas that are going to be virtually unplayable, so you really want to look at guys that hit fairways and hit greens, even if they don’t hit the ball quite as far.
This is a weak field with only one of the top 30 from the FedEx Cup playoffs on hand, which means that some talented, but inconsistent, players are at the top of the board. You’ve gotta dig this week and we’re here with a few shovels to help unearth the top value picks.
Brian Harman ($8,000) – Brian Harman is getting a little more respect here than he is in the betting markets, where he is a +6000 long shot to take down the title. Harman hasn’t played all that well so far this season, but he was one of the co-favorites for this tournament last year. Now you can get him at 60/1 in the market and $8,000 in DraftKings formats. Harman has basically had two bad rounds per event so far. Hopefully he can eliminate those at this course. After all, Harman was fourth here last year after missing the cut each of the two previous years. This one does have some risk, but it also has some reward.
Patton Kizzire ($7,400) – How quickly we’ve forgotten that Patton Kizzire actually played the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club. He hasn’t finished inside of the top 20 yet this season and has been something of a mess, but he’s managed to make all three cuts before really falling apart. He is something of a hometown kid for this one. That hasn’t been a big help yet, but he did open 66-69 last year, so he’s capable of putting himself in contention. Again, we’re taking some risks here with the first two picks, but these are two of the more accomplished guys in this weakened field.
Jason Dufner ($7,200) – Jason Dufner has made the rounds in the southeast at the premier courses down there, so he has to have a lot of familiarity with this one. Dufner finished with a final-round 64 at the OHL Classic last week, which is hopefully a sign of things to come. He had 24 birdies at Mayakoba and had a 66 and a 64 in that tournament. This is his first start at Sea Island since 2015. He was ninth that year at 10-under. This is definitely an under-the-radar option and hopefully he’ll come through for us.
Bud Cauley ($7,900) – Bud was good to us last week at Mayakoba, as he dropped 24 birdies and finished inside the top 30. With the weaker field, his salary has taken a little bit of a jump this week, but he has 44 birdies against 17 bogeys and a double over the last two events. Cauley finished eighth last year at the RSM Classic and tends to be a pretty decent coastal player. He’s not a big hitter, but he’s responsible off the tee and that goes a long way in this tournament.
Brice Garnett ($7,600) – When you talk about good coastal course guys or wind players, you don’t hear Brice Garnett’s name very often. He was exceptional last week at Mayakoba, as he sank 22 birdies against just four bogeys. Garnett hadn’t done too much before that, but maybe he just needed to get closer to water in North America. Garnett finished just inside the top 30 last year, but he did shoot an opening-round 65. Garnett’s only career win came last year in the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship. He actually played well in the Dell Technologies Championship before bowing out of the playoffs in the BMW Championship. But he really likes these beachy types of courses and that makes him a great grab at this price.
