When we come to the final week of the NFL regular season, it does pose a number of different handicapping challenges, because some teams have just been eliminated, while others are secure in their playoff position and might want to rest some people in preparation for post-season activity. We have that precise situation in front of us in the City of Brotherly Love on Sunday, as the Dallas Cowboys pay a visit to the Philadelphia Eagles, kicking off at 1 PM ET at Lincoln Financial Field. Fox Network televises it on a regional basis, and if you are a VietBet customer you can place wagers even after the game has kicked off as you enjoy what is available through Live Betting Ultra.
For the Cowboys, last Sunday was supposed to mark the triumphant return of running back Ezekiel Elliott from his six-game suspension, as they played host to the Seattle Seahawks. Elliott had 51 yards in the first quarter, almost looking like he was going to make good on his pledge to reach 200 against the Seattle defense. But he only had 46 the rest of the way, and the play-calling was brought into question as in one particular situation, with the Cowboys at first and goal on the Philadelphia three-yard line, at which point Elliott didn’t even get the ball. After a penalty, they subsequently missed a field goal (one of two misses for Dan Bailey on the afternoon), and on national television, Troy Aikman questioned what the Cowboys were doing in that situation. Of course, the head coach is Jason Garrett, was his former understudy in Dallas, but it looked like the criticism was directed more toward offensive coordinator Scott Linehan.
Jerry Jones said, when talking about Garrett, that “his job is not an issue at all,” and also that a lot of the younger players will see action on this closing weekend. Dak Prescott be looking for some redemption, after throwing for just 182 yards with two interceptions against Seahawks in the 21-12 defeat.
The Eagles have the best record in the NFC and home field advantage throughout the conference playoffs. They are 13-2 straight-up and 10-5 against the football pointspread. But there are nonetheless some worries on their part, because of an awful offensive showing they made, even in victory, against the Oakland Raiders last week.
In the odds at VietBet off of which we will make our football betting picks, the Cowboys are favored on the road:
Dallas Cowboys -3 (+100)
Philadelphia Eagles +3 (-120)
Over 40 points -110
Under 40 points -110
The Eagles beat the Raiders 19-10 last week, but they were pretty lucky to have done so. Nick Foles was not on his game at all, completing just 19 of 38 passes for 163 yards, and he directed an offense that had just 216 total yards and went a woeful one-for-14 on third down. There are a lot of doubts emerging, as this is the team’s only alternative as they have to move forward without the injured Carson Wentz. Keep in mind that when they beat the Giants 34-29 in Foles’ first start, they benefited from a blocked field goal, a blocked extra point and a blocked punt.
While the general consensus might be that Foles could use some more live game action with the first-team offense, coach Doug Pederson has expressed that he is going to give second-year man Nate Sudfeld some time on the field. And when he says, “I would assume he (Foles) would have to play some,” it almost sounds like a pre-season game, where the starter might be very limited.
The Cowboys were humiliated by the Eagles in the first meeting, dropping a 37-9 decision. Playing without the support of Elliott in the backfield, Prescott had only 145 yards and was intercepted three times. Philadelphia has already had a lot of injury problems, so you have to wonder about the dynamic as they try to get some guys some rest. We don’t necessarily expect that Elliott will be sitting much, since he is fresh and has only played one game after returning. Therefore, we are looking for Dallas to end things on a positive note – especially Dez Bryant, who made some complaints about not getting the ball, then got it, fumbled, and pouted again. . So we will lay the points as the Cowboys achieve some payback, as hollow as that might seem.
