It is said that if you can run the ball the National Football League, that becomes a real bonus, not to mention a pretty good way to protect your passer. Well, on Sunday we got two teams at about the opposite ends of the spectrum going at it when the Arizona Cardinals play host to the Tennessee Titans in a game that begins at 4:05 PM ET at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, AZ. If you are a VietBet customer you can get reduced juice, which helps you with more value in the football betting odds, and then after the game has kicked off, you can stay with the action by accessing the state-of-the-art software that is available through Live Betting Ultra.
For Arizona, the season has been something of a nightmare, because of the fact that they lost David Johnson, their duel-threat running back, early in the schedule with a wrist injury, and he is not returning to action. So they have really struggled to run the football, and that includes the period subsequent to the acquisition of all time great Adrian Peterson. He’s had some good games and some bad ones, and last week against the Los Angeles Rams, he did not play at all because of a neck injury. Surprisingly, Arizona got 116 rushing yards anyway, as Kerwynn Williams put in a very solid effort (97 yards). But that’s not necessarily something they can count on. No team in the NFL has run for fewer yards than the Cardinals. And that becomes a bigger problem than usual when you lose a quarterback like Carson Palmer, who will not return either in 2017. Blaine Gabbert has been the starter, actually coming in place of backup Drew Stanton, and he had a rough outing against the Rams, getting sacked six times and intercepted twice in the 32-16 defeat.
That loss left the Cardinals with a record of 5-7 straight-up (3-8-1 against the pointspread), and they are three games out of a wild-card spot with four games left. They face a Tennessee squad which has won six of its last seven games, moving to 8-4 straight-up (5-7 ATS) and are tied with the Jacksonville Jaguars for first place in the AFC South.
In the odds at VietBet upon which we will make our football betting picks, Tennessee is the road favorite:
Tennessee Titans -3 (-105)
Arizona Cardinals +3 (-115)
Over 44 points -110
Under 44 points -110
It is uncertain whether Peterson will be able to play this coming Sunday. And head coach Bruce Arians has said that he’s going to stay out of the decision-making process, leaving it up to the team’s trainers, as well as Peterson himself. He won’t be rushed into practice, and unquestionably one consideration will involve an honest evaluation as to whether Arizona can really compete for playoff spot. It might make sense, in terms of his health, to shut him down.
There wasn’t much “shutting down” of Tennessee’s ground game last weekend against Houston, as former Heisman Trophy winner Derrick Henry rambled for 109 yards, with DeMarco Murray adding 66, in the 24-13 victory. So the Titans certainly controlled the line of scrimmage, although the test this week might be a little stiffer, because the Cardinals are kind of stingy against the run on a per-carry basis (3.7 ypc allowed). And VietBet patrons might be surprised to know that no team in the league forces three-and-outs more frequently than they do (32.6% of the time).
Marcus Mariota doesn’t get sacked a whole lot (just 19 times), but he’s got just ten touchdown passes all season, and Tennessee really hasn’t found a lot of magic converting in the red zone (just 14th in NFL). Stanton is active for the Cards, which means he could “pitch” in relief. Can Williams give Arizona something dependable on the ground? These are variables. We are wary about laying the points, remember what ‘Zona did to Jacksonville a couple of weeks ago. We’ll take the points, as the Cards will make Mariota make some big plays to beat them. Can he?
