|266: SAN FRANCISCO

The San Francisco 49ers like to think they have their quarterback of the future in the fold, but that quarterback will likely not be the guy they will be going with on Sunday. Instead, it will be a rookie who is still learning the ropes who will take the snaps against a Seattle Seahawks team that is probably going to be a little annoyed after losing the Monday night game last week. These teams will get together at 4:05 PM ET at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, CA, and VietBet customers will have the opportunity to place wagers in real time as they take advantage of what is available through Live Betting Ultra.
The Niners had been going nowhere, and Jimmy Garoppolo, the impressive backup for the New England Patriots, was likely to take his shot at free agency in the off-season. So general manager John Lynch made the deal to bring Garoppolo on board, and released Brian Hoyer (later picked up by the Pats) , with CJ Beathard, the rookie third-round draft pick out of Iowa, holding onto the position for the time being. San Francisco picked up its first victory against the New York Giants a couple of weeks ago, but that was their only win. Currently they are 1-9 straight-up and 5-5 against the points, and are coming out of their bye week.
The Seahawks had a chance to pull into a first-place tie with the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC West on Monday night, but they lost at home (34-31) to the Atlanta Falcons, as Blair Walsh’s attempt at a game-tying field goal fell just short. They are 6-4 straight-up and 3-6-1 ATS, and now they face the possibility of having to move forward without half of their vaunted secondary. Richard Sherman was already out for the year with a torn Achilles, and safety Kam Chancellor may join him there with a neck injury. Those two are among the best in the business at what they do, so these losses are significant. How much will this matter against the rookie quarterback?
In the football betting odds that have been posted on this game by the folks at VietBet, the Seahawks are laying points on the road:
Seattle Seahawks -6.5 (-115)
San Francisco 49ers +6.5 (-105)
Over 43.5 points -110
Under 43.5 points -110
Beathard is obviously going to struggle in there. That, by the way, did not necessarily happen against the Giants, as he threw for 288 yards and was aided by 186 more on the ground. The word coming out of the Niners’ camp is that Garoppolo is looking very good in workouts, but that they don’t want to rush him, as they are looking at the long view. Of course, they don’t know how long they will have him. He will be the starter before the season is over, but just might not be there right now.
One thing Seattle can do to upset the rookie – or the lightly-used “veteran” – is to get their pass rush going. San Francisco has done a poor job at protecting its quarterbacks (32 sacks), and one can expect that Beathard is still wrestling with the concept of making quick decisions. Hoyer was the starter the first time these teams met, and he didn’t produce much. But the 49ers, behind Carlos Hyde, racked up 159 rushing yards and controlled the ball enough to keep things very close, losing a 12-9 verdict at CenturyLink Field. But Russell Wilson has played better since then, and now he has 21 touchdown passes with just seven picks.
The Niners have the scheduling edge, with an extra week to prepare, with Seattle coming in on a short week. But with Pierre Garcon injured, a thin Frisco wide receiver group gets thinner. We wouldn’t mind laying the points, especially if Pete Carroll’s team arrives in an angry mood, but with Beathard less equipped to exploit the Seattle secondary injuries than most QB’s, we’ll lean toward the “under” in this NFC West matchup.
