The Pittsburgh Panthers play for the first time as members of the ACC on Labor Day night, as they try to beat the college football betting lines against the Florida State Seminoles at Heinz Field.
Florida State feels like it punts one of these games away every single season. Last year, it was the NC State Wolfpack who caught the Seminoles napping. Could it be the Panthers this year? Head Coach Jimbo Fisher is going to try his best to make sure that isn’t going to happen. The Noles are returning a bunch of the pieces from a puzzle from a team that ranked 10th in the land in scoring offense and in the Top 10 in the land in total defense, rush defense, pass defense, and points allowed. What’s really changing though, is at the quarterback position. QB EJ Manuel is gone and was the second straight Florida State quarterback to be a first round pick in the NFL Draft. In is perhaps the next FSU phenom, QB Jameis Winston. There is a lot of hype that this dual threat quarterback is the next QB Johnny Manziel. We aren’t so sure that we will go that far, but Winston could already be better than Manuel was in his senior year.
The Panthers are making the big time leap from the Big East to the ACC, and that could be a tremendous challenge for a team that has been average in an average conference for years. It’s not that the ACC is all that much better, but there isn’t a team like Florida State in the Big East (and now in the American Athletic Conference). QB Tom Savage is going to take over as the team’s quarterback this year, and he is taking over for the departed QB Tino Sunseri. The question is whether the ground game, which ranked just 94th in the land at 133.1 yards per game a campaign ago, is going to cope without RB Ray Graham, who was the heart and soul of the ground game for a number of years in the Steel City. The defense actually ranked 23rd in the land, allowing 21.1 points per game, but in the end, this is a much tougher task than just about every team that the Big East offered last season.
We’re really afraid for the Panthers this year. We think that they are taking a major step up in class this season, and they are going to be paying for it. FSU will punt away a game that it should win at some point, but we don’t think that this is the one. Winston will lead the charge to victory right away and win this game by double digits.
