ESPN2 Wednesday Night Baseball Betting Preview: New York Mets vs. Florida Marlins
- Updated: June 30, 2010
New York Mets
NL East rivals meet up on ESPN2’s Wednesday Night Baseball, and Bang the Book has all of the MLB picks available for you to sink your teeth into. This MLB betting affair features the Florida Marlins and the New York Mets. The Fish have rebounded and will look to close out an awful month of June in a strong manner, as they can sweep New York out of Sun Life Stadium with a win tonight.
The man charged with the task of salvaging a game in this series for the Mets is RHP Mike Pelfrey. Pelfrey is 10-2 with a 2.71 ERA this year. He is fresh off of his tenth win of the season, which was earned in a 5-2 win over the Twins five days ago. On that day, the righty pitched six innings and allowed just two earned runs. His strikeout total is becoming a concern though, as one would like to think that five Ks over his L/3 starts (totaling 19 innings of work) simply has to improve for Pelfrey to keep this win total up. Also consider the fact that opposing batters are hitting 30 points less off of the right-hander this year from what they normally do. Disaster could be ready to strike in the Big Apple.
Poor RHP Chris Volstad has only won once since May 7th, and it really hasn’t totally been his fault. No, allowing three runs in six innings of work as he did against the Padres in his last start isn’t fantastic, but Volstad really should be getting more support from his team. In this run of bad luck in which he is 1-5, the righty has only seen his ERA rise from 4.37 to 4.40, and he has only watched his team plate an average of 3.67 runs per game. His bullpen has also conceded 17 runs after he has left in those nine starts, which is made all the more awful by the fact that he has thrown at least six frames in six of the nine.
Simply put, we are hoping that the market corrects itself tonight in South Beach. Pelfrey has been far too lucky this year for our tastes, while Volstad isn’t getting nearly lucky enough. The Fish have a little bit of momentum rolling, and you can bet that they will want to keep that going into the month of July in hopes for a big second half of the season.
