The Philadelphia Eagles got their second win of the season last week. Tampa Bay is still looking for their first win of the season. The Bucs have changed starting quarterbacks, but this is a team with plenty of problems. Can Chip Kelly’s Eagles get back to .500 with a win over the Bucs, or will Tampa Bay pick up their first win of the season?
Chip Kelly was the most popular guy in town after the Eagles season opening win over Washington, but after three straight losses the city of Philadelphia was giving him a lot of heat. Last week’s win over the suddenly-hapless Giants helped out, but this team still has plenty to prove. Mike Vick is expected to miss this game with an injury, and Nick Foles will be the starting quarterback on Sunday. Earlier this week, Kelly said that if Foles competes well in the next week or two he could take over the starting quarterback job permanently. The Eagles have the top running game in the NFL so far this year. Shady McCoy is averaging 5.2 yards per carry, and he is loving Kelly’s fast-paced offense. The Eagles are second in the NFL in total offense, but they are just eighth in points scored per game.
Defensively, Philadelphia has a lot of problems. This defense was strong a couple years ago, but now they are a real liability. Philadelphia is 31st in the league in yards allowed per game. The secondary is giving up 326 yards per game through the air. The Eagles have allowed 31.8 points per game so far this season. This unit must improve if the Eagles are going to contend.
The Tampa Bay Bucs had what most saw as an easy game in New York against the Jets in week one. Tampa Bay led for the majority of that game, but they let it slip away with silly mistakes at the end of the game. The Bucs season has been all downhill since then. Josh Freeman is long gone after the team decided he had regressed too far and for too long. Mike Glennon hasn’t been the answer thus far either, and the Bucs offense has been bad all year. Doug Martin is a talented runner, but defenses are daring the Bucs to throw the football right now. Tampa Bay is second to last in the NFL in points per game at just 11 so far this season.
The Tampa Bay defense has quite a bit of talent. Truthfully, the defense has held their own quite nicely this year. Tampa Bay has only given up 17.5 points per game for the year. The secondary instantly got better with the signing of Revis in the offseason, and the front seven has been solid as well. The injuries are starting to mount for this unit, so that’s something to keep an eye on moving forward.
Free Pick: Under 45.5
This is a game that is tough to place any large wagers on. We don’t know enough about either team with young unproven starters under center. Look for this one to be a little lower scoring than expected.
