Probable Starters: Capuano (Los Angeles) vs. Samardzija (Chicago)
Moneyline: Dodgers -110
The Los Angeles Dodgers are rolling, as they are now 10 games above .500 and four up in the NL West with a lead that seems to be growing every single day. They are set to take on the Chicago Cubs in MLB betting action for the third time in this four-game series on Saturday afternoon in one of the many Saturday afternoon games on FOX.
The Dodgers have been simply sick over the course of the last two months. They were 9.5 games back just seven weeks ago, but they are four up now in the NL West and are winners of two straight, six out of seven, 12 out of 14, 29 out of 36. The offense has scored at least six runs six times in LA’s last 12 games, and the pitching staff has held seven straight foes to four runs or fewer and six of those seven foes to just three runs or fewer. LHP Chris Capuano is still trying to nail down that last spot in the rotation, which has been really the only problem point over the course of the whole year. Capuano though, has been strong of late, winning three straight outings for his team and posting a 2.60 ERA and a 0.98 WHIP in those starts. Capuano is still only leading the Dodgers to a 6-7 record in his 13 outings this year, but he is clearly a much better pitcher now than he was over the course of the first three months of the season.
The Cubs at least made a bit of a run through almost the end of July, but they lost three out of four against the lowly Milwaukee Brewers, and the season has seemed to tumble a bit since then. Chicago has dropped to from seven-games below .500 to 11-games below .500, and the possibility is once again there that the team won’t even win 70 times this season. That said, we still think that the Cubs are heading in the right direction after making a number of moves at the trade deadline to make themselves younger. RHP Jeff Samardzija is now one of the elder statesmen on the team, but at 28 years old, it’s not like he is over the hill at this point. Samardzija has always been known as a big time strikeout pitcher, and this is yet another season in which he is averaging over a strikeout per inning. The righty though, has only guided the Cubs to a 10-12 record in his 22 starts, and that’s part of the reason why the North Siders aren’t in the thick of the race coming into August.
That said, we still don’t quite trust the fact that the Dodgers are so hot at the moment. LA is a great team, no doubt, but to be laying chalk on the road against a team that is throwing one of its best pitchers probably isn’t a fantastic idea. We very well could rue the day that we faded the boys in Dodger Blue, but we are going to back Chicago on Saturday for the mild upset.
