NFL Betting Favorite: Chiefs -3
The Cowboys and Chiefs both emerged from week one with a victory. Dallas received six turnovers from the Giants en route to a close 36-31 victory. Kansas City was busy beating up on the hapless Jacksonville Jaguars in week one. The Chiefs only won two games last year, but they dominated Jacksonville 28-2 last Sunday. Which one of these teams will go to 2-0 after this game?
Dallas has to be thrilled to start the season off on the right note, but the Cowboys clearly have a lot to be working on in the week ahead. Eli Manning passed for 450 yards against the Cowboys defense last week. Dallas fumbled the football twice in their game against New York, but they were fortunate to get both of those fumbles back. On the positive side, the Cowboys did sack Manning three times. The Cowboys offensive line performed pretty well against the New York Giants elite pass rush. Tony Romo threw for 263 yards, but it took him 49 attempts to get to that total. The Cowboys did a nice job controlling the ball for 37 minutes against the Giants last week, and that was a big positive takeaway from week one.
There is no doubt that is an absolutely crucial year for Dallas. The Cowboys have been stuck in neutral for too long. Expectations are always high in Dallas, and this year is absolutely no different. Jason Garrett is on the hot seat, and there is more pressure on Tony Romo than ever before. Dallas is going to have be more consistent this season.
Kansas City went 2-14 last year, but many people picked the Chiefs as a sleeper team for the 2013 season. Why were the Chiefs a popular sleeper pick? Andy Reid has had a lot of success as an NFL coach, and the Chiefs went out and upgraded the quarterback position in a big way with Alex Smith. Jamaal Charles is one of the NFL’s best running backs, and as long as he stays healthy the Chiefs will have a good running game. Dexter McCluster is an X-factor as well, since he can take it the length of the field any time he touches the football.
It isn’t just the Chiefs offense that is dangerous. The defense is actually the much more impressive unit. Kansas City has some very nice pieces on defense. Eric Berry leads a secondary that is quickly improving. Tamba Hali and Derrick Johnson are elite players in the front seven, and the Chiefs have a lot of young talent that should just keep getting better. Kansas City’s defense looked amazing last week, but there are going to be a lot of defenses that look great against Jacksonville this year.
Free Pick: Chiefs -3
The majority of the betting public sees this line and thinks that the obvious play here is the Cowboys. I think that Kansas City has one of the best home field advantages in the NFL, and they have the better defense and better running back. I’ll take the home team.
