The regular season is winding down already. It’s hard to believe we are already to week eleven in the college football season. We wait so long for the season to come along, and then it goes by so fast. Last weekend there were lots of marquee matchups, and the same is true again this week!
All season long, I’ll be doing a weekly college football scheduling spots to watch article for BangtheBook. The goal of this article is to highlight a few scheduling spots that could be tricky for one of the teams involved in that particular contest. My hope is that by reading this article, you’ll be able to see the process and spot these types of situations in the future.
Washington at Stanford – The Washington Huskies don’t have many tough scheduling spots this year. Washington’s schedule is about as easy as you’ll find for a contender, which could certainly hurt them a great deal. Washington rolls into Palo Alto for a game against Stanford on Friday night this week. Stanford’s rushing offense is among the top in the country with Bryce Love in the backfield. Washington’s defense is elite against the pass and very good against the run. Can Washington pass this tough road test?
Washington State at Utah – Washington State also faces a really tough test this week. Washington State just beat Stanford 24-21 last week. The Cougars haven’t been very good on the road this year. We all remember their blowout losses against both Cal and Arizona. They take on Utah this weekend, and playing in Utah is never an easy task. This is a tremendous home field advantage for the Utes, and Washington State is in a difficult portion of their schedule.
Oklahoma State at Iowa State – Oklahoma State just lost their rivalry game to Oklahoma. They also lost their chance at a spot in the playoffs. Now, they have to go to Iowa State in a very tricky road game. It’s tough for college kids to get up for a game like this when they have already missed out on two of their biggest goals for the season. Iowa State is coming off a loss at West Virginia. Oklahoma State is the better team, but this is a terrible spot for them. Mike Gundy is a great motivator, but he’ll have his work cut out for him this week.
Wyoming at Air Force – Interesting spot for both teams here. Wyoming is coming off a surprising win over Colorado State. The Cowboys were definitely aided by the elements in the second half of that game and scored a late touchdown to squeak out a win. That’s a rivalry game for Wyoming, so it is possible that took a lot out of them. Air Force is coming off being shut out by Army in a rivalry game for them. Air Force is probably in the better spot here since they should be ticked off about last week’s performance, but the Falcons defense is hard to trust.
Southern Miss at Rice – The Southern Miss Golden Eagles are coming off a loss to Tennessee. They actually outplayed Tennessee in that one, but turnovers cost them a win. Rice was beaten 52-21 by UAB even though they outgained the Blazers. Rice continues to turn the ball over at an alarming rate. This is homecoming for Rice though, and it would be easy for Southern Miss to overlook them. Rice shouldn’t lack motivation here, but can they hold onto the football?
Duke at Army – Duke is in a much better scheduling/situational spot than Army. The Blue Devils were off last week. They had two weeks to prepare for the triple option. David Cutcliffe’s teams have usually done well against the triple option. Army is coming off a huge 21-0 victory over Air Force. That’s the type of game that it is easy to have a letdown after. The early move in the market suggests there are some sharps who agree and are backing Duke on the road here.
