There has been some frustration in recent years on the part of the Troy Trojans in their games against the Arkansas State Red Wolves, and last season’s encounter was just a total embarrassment for them. So with some payback on their minds, and perhaps the opportunity to forge a regular-season tie in the Sun Belt Conference, the Trojans line up for action at 7:30 PM ET, but they have to do it at Centennial Bank Stadium in Jonesboro, AR. If you are a VietBet patron, you can get reduced juice on this game, thereby allowing you to avoid laying the customary -110 in the college football odds, and while you watch it on ESPN2, you can also get involved with exciting real-time wagering after the kickoff, using the state-of-the-art software available through Live Betting Ultra.
Arkansas State comes into this game with a record of 7-3 straight-up and 6-4 against the college football pointspread. They are already bowl-eligible, and in fact the Red Wolves were the last team to beat Scott Frost’s Central Florida Knights, downing them 31-13 in last year’s Cure Bowl. They have gone to the post-season in each of Blake Anderson’s previous three seasons as head coach; he has now compiled a 31-18 record at the school. This season’s non-conference slate included a competitive effort at Nebraska, where they lost 43-36 is a 14.5-point underdog. They also had their game with top 10-ranked Miami canceled due to Hurricane Irma.
Troy, which has sent a lot of outstanding players to the NFL, including future Hall of Famer DeMarcus Ware, is on a five-game winning streak, which has brought its record to 9-2 straight-up. The Trojans are only 4-6-1 ATS, but between these two teams, they do have the marquee victory, having gone to Baton Rouge on September 30 and beating LSU, now rated #16 in the Coaches’ poll by a 24-21 score.
In the college football odds that have been posted on this game by the folks at VietBet, Arkansas State is the slight home favorite:
Arkansas State Red Wolves -1
Troy Trojans +1
Over 59 points -110
Under 59 points -110
Justice Hansen, an Oklahoma transfer, leads Arkansas State, which has the nation’s 14th-ranked offense (ninth in scoring at 39.9 ppg). Hansen, who has thrown 32 touchdown passes with 64% accuracy, spreads the ball around very well, which is something that must be noted. In fact, no less than five different receivers have been targeted between 11% and 18% of the time. And there’s a lot of experience in that receiving crew, including senior tight end Blake Mack, who has caught 40 passes, including seven touchdowns.
Defense sometimes lacks for the Red Wolves, however, and they surrendered almost 600 yards and 50 points to Louisiana-Monroe last week, even in victory. Troy does not lack for defense; they are 17th overall and seventh in the country in rushing defense (yielding 2.95 ypc). But they are a little further down the list when it comes to pass efficiency “D” – in fact, a lot further down (56th). So they will have their hands full. Remember that Anderson has solved this team every season he has been in charge, and last year the Red Wolves were beneficiaries of five turnovers and also held the Trojans to just 262 yards in a 35-3 win.
Running back Jordan Chunn (741 yards) will be a load for ASU to handle, but Brandon Silvers (11 TD’s, six INT’s) may not be equipped to trade. We can’t sit here and tell you convincingly that revenge works for Troy, and although we respect the earlier upset over LSU, we’re moving with the home team, headed toward yet another post-season appearance.
