The Virginia Tech Hokies had an opportunity to make a statement on a national basis last week, and they came up short against Miami team against whom they should have had some advantages. But now they will have to shake themselves off after an 18-point defeat to take on the Georgia Tech YellowJjackets, who have lost two games in a row, in a game that begins at 12:20 PM ET at Grant Field in Atlanta. It was just a real failure offensively for Virginia Tech, which converted only three times out of 14 opportunities on third down, with quarterback Josh Jackson suffering three turnovers, including two interceptions. V-Tech was a little surprised at the strength of Miami’s defense, which kept them from doing very much at all after the first possession of the second half, when Jackson scored on a cornerback sneak.
But they could not seem to corral Miami quarterback Malik Rosier, who gained 84 yards, and that’s not necessarily the best omen when you have to go against Georgia Tech, which has that option offense led by Taquon Marshall, who is a very capable person with the ball in his hands. However, Georgia Tech defense failed it against Virginia last weekend, as they blew a 15-point lead in the second half, allowing the Cavaliers to score 27 points.
In the college football betting odds posted on this game by the folks at VietBet, the Hokies are slight favorite:
Virginia Tech Hokies -5
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets +5
Over 50 points -110
Under 50 points -110
One thing that had to be very encouraging for the Yellow Jackets is the fact that Marshall was able to throw for 179 yards, and we say that because against a defense like Virginia Tech, it is useful if you can be two-dimensional. Remember that Bud Foster has fine-tuned this unit, and even though this was a losing effort last weekend against Miami, they are a team that on an overall basis has yielded just three yards per carry.
Last week Virginia came became bowl eligible by beating Georgia Tech, but the Jackets will gain bowl eligibility with a victory here, and they got a waiver on the six-win requirement because they had to cancel a game against Central Florida. So they will have three cracks at it – this week, against a nationally -ranked foe (the Hokies are 17th in both polls), next week against Duke and then, against the Georgia Bulldogs, who could be in the #2 spot the polls by that time.
Fundamentally, we would have to favor Virginia Tech here, and for that we can actually go to the technical trends. Paul Johnson is in his 10th year as the head coach at Georgia Tech, and against the Hokies he is 3-6 against the pointspread. The great thing about V-Tech is the fact that they have great continuity in the defensive coaching staff, because Foster has been around more than two decades. So there is no question he knows how to get his team ready to defend the option.
We respect the fact that Georgia Tech is 6-1-1 against the number on the season, and they have lost a couple of very close games. Still, we are expecting Virginia Tech to bounce back, so we will lay the small number.
