College Football Betting 2014: Three Teams To Watch
- Updated: June 16, 2014
The college football betting season does not kick off until August, but it is never too early to look ahead. While several teams like Florida State, Alabama and Oregon will always be in the Top 25, the goal for the college football handicapper is too find teams that will provide value in the early going from a point spread standpoint. These teams go undiscovered early in the season, but for the smart handicapper if they can find these teams early enough, it could be a boost to the bankroll.
UCLA Bruins: The Bruins seem to be a very good team this season, but Oregon is getting all of the love. UCLA is loaded with returning starters and has enough program momentum to break through as a national championship playoff contender in 2014.. One way the Bruins can tilt a few unfavorable matchups their way will be to win the field position battle again in 2014. UCLA started drives nearly 7 yards further downfield on average than its opponents last year. If they can overcome the tough schedule they will be a team to watch.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish: The Irish are never overlooked because of their popularity, but they could be better than most of the experts think this season. The Irish welcome back quarterback Everett Golson, who led them to a BCS national championship game appearance in the 2012 season before serving an academic suspension in 2013. New defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder promises to bring a more aggressive approach and improve upon their No. 77 national ranking last season in forcing three-and-outs. However, like the aforementioned Bruins, the Fighting Irish have a very difficult schedule to navigate. In certain spots against some better teams, the Irish could provide plenty of value for the seasoned college football bettor.
Kansas State Wildcats: The Wildcats seem to be overlooked every year. Their ability to win games with field position and special teams (ranking among the top 35 in special teams efficiency in each of the last five years under Bill Snyder) gives Kansas State an opportunity to win every game, even though it is often overmatched in terms of program recruiting rankings. They have a great coach and play solid fundamental football and that will make this team dangerous in 2014.
These are just a few of the teams that could provide a problem this season for other teams while providing an edge to the college football handicapper. Take time to do research and discover your own list of under the radar teams that could bea college football betting dream when the season kicks off this fall.
