Tuesday night turned into a fun night of college basketball. Overall, there were 11 games featuring ranked teams. A few surprise teams came into the night undefeated. Well, some left unscated while others had to take their lumps in the process.
The Big Ten continued their early season conference schedule. Both games featured ranked teams going on the road. The No. 3 Michigan State Spartans survived a tough contest at Rutgers. Meanwhile, the Minnesota Golden Gophers lost to the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Both games ended with 10 point margins.
The No. 20 TCU Horned Frogs continued their ascension towards the top of the Big 12. They defeated the SMU Mustangs, 94-83 for their ninth win of the season. Are the Horned Frogs the real deal? Yes. However, they have to continue to play in this fashion once conference play starts.
Wichita State had to come back from a halftime deficit to defeat the South Dakota State Jackrabbits in a thrilling game. The 95-85 win moved the Shockers to (7-1). Landry Shamet led the Shockers with 21 points and 8 assists. Mike Daum poured in 31 points in 31 minutes for the Jackrabbits.
Let’s take a look at these 7 Trends from Tuesday night.
Team Of The Night: Villanova Wildcats- The Wildcats dismantled the Gonzaga Bulldogs 88-72 to push their record to (9-0). Mikal Bridges led the way with 28 points, 6 rebounds and 2 scintillating blocks in the thorough win. Phil Booth displayed a lot of his explosiveness with an array of dunks, while scoring 20 points. More impressively, the Wildcats did this with Eric Paschall going 0-of-7 from the field.
Upset Of The Night: Ball State Cardinals- The Ball State Cardinals came into their contest against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish with a (4-4) record. Well, they left the building with a winning record for the first time this season. Their 80-77 win was highlighted by a 3-pointer from Tayler Persons with 1.7 seconds left. Is this just a blip on the radar for the Eagles, or are they officially turning a corner? The Fighting Irish have lost 2 of their last 3 games.
Ranked Teams Losing: Six- On an easy Tuesday night of basketball six ranked teams lost. Naturally, ranked teams were going to lose due to head to head Top 25 matchups. However, it was a few upsets that really turned college basketball upside down last night. No. 14 Minnesota lost to unranked Nebraska by 10. No. 7 Texas A&M lost to unranked Arizona by three points. No. 22 Nevada lost to unranked Texas Tech by six points. No. 9 Notre Dame lost to unranked Ball State by three points.
Top 25 Matchups: Two Games- No. 4 Villanova over No. 12 Gonzaga by 16. No. 18 West Virginia over No. 15 Virginia by seven points.
Old Big East Matchup: Syracuse Orange defeated UCONN Huskies, 72-63. The game wasn’t always played at a high level. That can be highlighted by one stat. Orange point guard Frank Howard accounted for nine turnovers. Yet, UCONN still turned the ball over more than Syracuse.
Blowout Of The Night: Duke Blue Devils- The Blue Devils scored 53 points in the second half and they let off the gas pedal in their win over St. Francis-PA. The Blue Devils scored 71 points in the first half of the 124-67 victory. Clearly, you have to be better than Duke to beat them. It’s hard to see an upset happening with this squad.
Dunk Of The Night: To be fair, I didn’t see every dunk take place on Tuesday night. However, Mo Bamba’s dunk on VCU was fun to watch. The Texas Longhorn’s escaped with a four point victory.
