Are you ready for the month of March and the fever pitch of college basketball betting action that will be coming your way? If the answer to that question is no, then you have plenty of work to do. Teams are looking at the tail end of the schedule of the regular season and they realize that every game is important when looking for big games that could impact their standing in the NCAA tournament. Many teams are looking to just get in the big dance while others are hoping for a high seed to make for an easier path to a national championship.
As a basketball bettor it is time to carefully navigate the rest of the regular season and look for the games and the teams that provide the most betting value down the stretch.
This weekend the college basketball betting sheet is looking at some talented teams and games that are very interesting for the weekend of February 9th to February 11th.
The Minnesota Golden Gophers are one of those teams that are looking for a victory. A win on the road against the Indiana Hoosiers can only help their resume. The Golden Gophers are an ugly 2-8 against the spread (ATS) in the last ten games overall and they are going up against an Indiana team who is red-hot at the betting window with a 8-2 ATS record in their last ten outings. The Hoosiers are installed as (-7) point favorites and are getting all of the attention at the betting window. However the Hoosiers are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games after allowing less than 50 points in their previous game and the underdog in this series is an amazing 21-7 ATS in the last 28 meetings between these two teams. This series has always produced close games and that will be the case once again. It may not seem like a safe bet, but betting on the Golden Gophers this weekend should provide a profit.
Defense Wins Ballgames
The Virginia Cavaliers have to be one of this year’s biggest surprise team in college basketball. Many people believe that they do not win pretty games because they focus on defense but the end result is that the Cavs are now one of the best teams in the country. They are undefeated at home and they are 23-1 straight up on the season. They have an incredible 16-4-1 ATS record but they are powered by defense. The Cavs rank at the top of the list in defensive efficiency (80.4), scoring defense (52.7), paint points allowed (21.2) and second-chance points allowed (7.3). This has not only provided a winning formula that has provided some solid victories but it has produced an incredible over/under record. The Cavs have seen 16 of the 22 games that they have played go under the total. The under is 6-1 in the last seven games overall and it may be something to watch when they go up against Virginia Tech this weekend.
Press on Purdue
When a team has a monumental winning streak they are obviously a good team, but the scoring margin shows just how good that the Purdue Boilermakers are. They outscore team by at least 20 points per game and that makes them good straight up and against the spread. They are 14-11 ATS this season but have been sloppy of late going 0-5 ATS in the last five games. This could be a sign of a correction which could show up again in two big road games including a big game against the Michigan State Spartans this weekend. The Spartans have huge revenge in this game and they are 9-6 ATS at home this season. In the short term Purdue may be in a trouble spot, but in the long run they have some value. In the last two decades a team that scores more than 20 points more than their opponent has all gone to the Elite Eight and many have made the title game. Purdue may be a fade this weekend, but they are a nice pick to win it all.
