College Basketball Betting: Purdue Boilermakers vs. Wisconsin Badgers Pick

Purdue Boilermakers
(18-4, 12-7 ATS)

Wisconsin Badgers
(15-5, 10-6 ATS)

Depth could be a key issue in Tuesday night’s NCAA basketball betting affair, as the Wisconsin Badgers take on the Purdue Boilermakers.

Purdue’s depth really only goes two men deep. Now, those two men might be the best that the Big Ten has to offer, as JaJuan Johnson and E’Twaun Moore are both All Big Ten candidates this year. Moore is averaging 17.5 points per game on the campaign, while Johnson is at 20.8 points per game. These two generally combine for over half of the team’s scoring, as the club as a whole is only averaging 74.4 points per game. However, when the others do contribute, it’s generally from the outside, and that’s where Lewis Jackson and Ryne Smith made a real difference on Saturday against the Minnesota Golden Gophers. The 13 points for Jackson has him up to 7.0 points per game on the season, which makes him the team’s third leading scorer. We also know that the Boilermakers play some absolutely fantastic defense, keeping teams down to just 60.7 points per game, ranking No. 26 in the land. This unit on the road though, has been iffy at best, conceding at least 68 in four straight, including 87 against the Ohio State Buckeyes last week in the biggest loss of the season.

Wisconsin really doesn’t have all that much depth either, and if you want the perfect display of that, just check out what the team did on Saturday against the Penn State Nittany Lions. The bench only accounted for 26 minutes between them, and they only came up with one assist and two boards between them all. The rest of the stats came from the starting five. The Badgers do go three deep on a regular basis, but between Jordan Taylor, Jon Leuer, and Keaton Nankivil, they are scoring over two thirds of the points on the average night. If there is one thing that Wisconsin does have in its corner, it is that it really does shoot well from the charity stripe. At 81.8 percent as a team, this ranks No. 1 in the country, and there are several teams that don’t have a single player, let alone an entire team, shooting that well. The Badgers also play some great defense to boot, just like Purdue does. They are allowing just 56.0 points per game, and if not for a three point field goal defense that ranks a paltry No. 201 in the land, perhaps they would have the No. 1 scoring ‘D’ in the country, and not one that ranks No. 3.

Life in the Big Ten is very simple. Just keep backing home teams. We know that it might not make sense to lay six or seven points with the Badgers in this one, and we know that there are going to be some upsets from time to time. However, when push comes to shove, even laying college basketball odds like this one, the home team is still going to prevail more often than not.
