College Basketball Betting Preview: Louisville Cardinals vs. Marquette Golden Eagles
- Updated: March 1, 2010
(19-10, 9-15 ATS)
Marquette Golden Eagles
(19-9, 14-7-1 ATS)
A pair of 10-6 teams in Big East play lock horns in what will certainly sew up a spot to the NCAA Tournament for the winner when the Louisville Cardinals travel to the Marquette Golden Eagles. The Eagles have won three straight overtime games, all on the road in recent weeks. That should more than make up for the number of close losses that the squad suffered early in Big East action. The Cardinals have been hot as well, taking four out of their L/5 games. Both of these squads were left for dead just about a month ago, but now, the winner will reach the coveted 20-win plateau and will most likely get their dancing shoes on.
F Samardo Samuels continues to be the leader for HC Rick Pitino’s team. Even though he only shot 4/11 from the floor against the Huskies, his 14 point effort marked his fourth straight double-digit point scoring game and his ninth in his L/10. Louisville stormed back from a 45-40 halftime deficit in that crucial victory at Connecticut to win by a bucket in the closing stages. Three other players scored in double digits, which is a marked improvement for a team that only has two players scoring more than 8.5 points per game.
Many of the Big East teams are afraid of Marquette because it has only lost by more than seven points once in a game this season. The only losses by more than five came against Pittsburgh and Wisconsin, and five of those losses were suffered by only one or two points. F Lazar Hayward has been dominant all season long, scoring a team-high 18.4 points per game. G Jimmy Butler has been incredibly consistent as well, as he is shooting 54% from the field and 52% from downtown, scoring 15.5 points and bringing in 6.5 rebounds per game.
Louisville is playing great ball right now, but this college basketball spread is just too short to ignore. The Golden Eagles are a solid 12-3 at home this year SU, and though they are only 5-4 ATS, they’re clearly the right choice in this battle. The Cardinals are just 4-10 ATS in their L/14 games overall, and they’re going to slump to another defeat on Tuesday night.
