The Irish picked up their 20th win of the season in fine form last week when they crushed the West Virginia Mountaineers 71-44. Of course, they were upset by the St. John’s Red Storm at Madison Square Garden, perhaps a bad omen of things that could be to come in the Big East Tournament. This was a team that was doing so well offensively before the dud at MSG. Eric Atkins, in spite of the fact that he is the team’s leading scorer and played in all 40 minutes against the Johnnies only scored five points, and aside from Scott Martin, who put up 18 points, the rest of the starters only shot 7-for-33 from the field. Needless to say, efforts like that aren’t going to cut it on a regular basis, especially against a team like this that can play some outstanding defense and get plenty of work offensively as well. Notre Dame will have to win this game on the back of its defense as well, and this is one of the best units in the conference as well, allowing 61.6 points per game.

BetOnline.comThe Hoyas has a pretty iffy start to their week last week, getting trounced on the road by the Seton Hall Pirates, a team that was struggling as badly as anyone else in the conference was playing. At least the weekend wrapped up well with a dominating win here at the Verizon Center against the Villanova Wildcats. However, there are a lot of questions about this team and the schedule that it has played of late. The truth of the matter is that the only big time game in the Big East that the Hoyas have played since the beginning of January was the OT loss at the Carrier Dome against the Syracuse Orange. The advantage that Georgetown has for the most part is the fact that it is a huge team. Hollis Thompson, Henry Sims, and Otto Porter are all great rebounders and can all be forces on both ends of the court. Of course, Jason Clark is the man that is going to make this offense get going. He doesn’t have a heck of a lot of help in the backcourt, but he is the team’s leading scorer by a relatively comfortable margin at 14.5 points per game.

The Final Word: We just aren’t buying into the Hoyas right now. Their schedule might have fooled us all, as we really don’t think that this is one of the best 10 teams in the nation. Notre Dame has the ability to get the job done on the road, and it has proven it several times before. Don’t be shocked if the Irish pull off the upset on Big Monday.
