NBA Betting Preview – Clippers and Thunder Stage Showdown at Staples
- Updated: April 9, 2014
The Oklahoma City Thunder had aspirations about winning the regular season title in the Western Conference and going through the playoffs with a home court advantage. It hasn’t quite turned out that way, but the Thunder, the #2 team in the West, cannot dwell on that, because they have all they can handle in beating back the oncoming Los Angeles Clippers, who are targeting that second spot for themselves.
On Wednesday night these teams are slated to meet up at the Staples Center in basketball betting action that is scheduled to get underway at 10:35 PM ET.
Oklahoma City comes into this game with a straight-up record of 56-21 and is 41-35-1 against the NBA pointspread. The Clippers are 55-23 straight-up and 44-33-1 versus the number. So sportsbook customers, in doing the math, can figure out that if the Clippers win this contest, they will pull to within a half-game of the Thunder in the battle for the #2 slot, which could become extremely important, should both of these teams make it through their respective opening round playoff series.
In the basketball betting odds posted at VietBet on this game, the Clippers lay a small number:
Los Angeles Clippers -3.5
Oklahoma City Thunder +3.5
Over 213 points -110
Under 213 points -110
The Thunder rolled to a 107-92 victory against the Sacramento Kings on Tuesday night, in a game where the game was sufficiently decided so that some of the starters could catch some rest. Kevin Durant was one of them. He sat out the entire fourth quarter of the game against Sacramento, and that effectively brought his 41-game streak of games scoring at least 25 points to an end. He couldn’t be happier about that, because he felt that it was a distraction.
For those basketball bettors who are not familiar with what is going on with another starting player, point guard Russell Westbrook, he is being preserved in favor of resting his knee (he has had three procedures in the last year). playing only one half of back-to-back situations. Coach Scott Brooks sat him out against the Kings so that he could be ready for this one. Obviously since there are no back-to-backs in the playoffs, they Thunder aren’t going to have that to worry about once the post-season begins.
How good are the Clippers? That is something VietBet customers may have been asking themselves earlier in the season, but the uncertainty about that has become less and less. Charles Barkley, the Hall of Famer and TNT commentator, has been hailing the Clippers as possibly the best team in the West for some time now, and they have been absolutely sizzling, winning 18 of their last 21 games straight-up. After Sunday’s 120-97 win over the Lakers, they have now covered five of their last six games against the basketball betting lines.
They hit ten of their 19 three-point attempts in that game, and they shot better than 50% for the first time in the last eight games. By the way, only one opponent in the last fourteen has shot 50% against the Clips.
There have been three meetings this season. The Clippers won the first one at the Staples Center on November 13, although they hit just six of 28 shots from three-point range in the 111-103 victory. On November 21, the Thunder scored a 105-91 win on the strength of 52% shooting, while the Clippers hit 52% themselves on February 23, making 39 trips to the line in a 125-117 road triumph as a 5.5-point dog in basketball betting at the Chesapeake Energy Arena. Westbrook had just come back into the Oklahoma City lineup at that point.
Los Angeles is likely going to be without Jamal Crawford, who is still dealing with his Achilles injury. But JJ Redick is back in action at long last, and the Clippers present as well-rounded an offensive team as the Thunder have faced this season, when one considers the presence not only of power forward Blake Griffin and point guard Chris Paul (18 points, eight rebounds, twelve assists vs. Thunder in last meeting), but also Redick, center DeAndre Jordan (the league leader in field goal percentage) and a host of role players.. It becomes tougher task to stop them without defensive standout Thabo Sefolosha, who is still out with a calf injury.
