UTEP enters this contest on a zero-game winning streak while Charlotte has lost zero straight. The Niners are on the upswing after a 34-20 victory over Middle Tennessee last week where Chris Reynolds completed 14-of-21 passes for 192 yards and one touchdown. Aaron McAllister (104 rushing yards on 24 attempts, two TDs) and the signal-caller Reynolds (103 yards on 16 carries, one TD) led the ground attack. Cameron Dollar (three receptions, 80 yards) and Victor Tucker (three catches, 50 yards) handled the receiving duties in the win.

A week ago, North Texas took care of this UTEP crew by a score of 52-26. Kai Locksley completed 17-of-29 passes for 119 yards. Treyvon Hughes (97 rushing yards on 17 attempts, three TDs) and the signal-caller Locksley (27 yards on 14 carries) mounted the running attack while Justin Garrett (11 receptions, 77 yards) and Alan Busey (two catches, 20 yards) led the pass-catching attack in the loss.

Each of these teams has a nearly identical (61-39) run-pass ratio on the season. The 49ers, however, have run for 211 yards per game (including 171 per game versus Conference USA opponents) and have 20 touchdowns on the ground this year. The Miners haven’t been quite as productive. They’re putting up 136 rushing yards per contest (122 in conference) and have 14 total rush TDs.

It appears that the 49ers ought to have the edge along both the offensive and defensive fronts. Their offensive line has given up just 38 sacks while their D-line logged 19 sacks. The Miners offensive line has given up 42 sacks and their defense has sacked opposing QBs just 20 times.

The Niners have averaged 207 yards in the air overall (225 per game versus conference opposition) and have 18 passing scores so far. The Miners have put up 161 pass yards per outing (169.2 against CUSA foes) and have four total pass TDs.

Defensively, Charlotte should have the upper hand when it comes to limiting the pass. The team has let opponents run for an average of 201 yards and pass for 209 yards per game. UTEP has allowed 177.3 yards per game on the ground and 251 to opponents in the air. The Niners are allowing an adjusted net yards per pass attempt (ANY/A) of 7.98 to opponents, while the Miners have given up a whopping 9.09 ANY/A.

Reynolds has amassed 1,344 passing yards on the year. He’s connected on 100-of-167 attempts with 13 passing touchdowns and six interceptions. Reynolds has a 7.07 adjusted net yards per pass attempt overall, although that number sits at 11.09 over the past two outings.

Kai Locksley has accounted for 429 yards, one TD and two INTs for UTEP. His ANY/A stands at a very poor 2.62 for the year and 4.60 over his last two outings.

These two conference foes did not get a chance to face each other in 2018.
