The 2016 Kentucky Derby is over and the talk among horse racing fanatics is focusing on one thing and that is the chances to get a triple crown. Nyquist is the latest horse that is staring down a chance to win all three of the big time races.
For those that don’t know, a Triple Crown is a rare but prestigious achievement. The Triple Crown of horse racing consists of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes. The series starts on the first Saturday in May with the Kentucky Derby, then followed two weeks later by the Preakness with the Belmont three weeks later. Now with the Kentucky Derby over and an undefeated winner in the books the horse racing bettors are wondering if history will repeat itself soon.
Just last year the feat was accomplished and now people are eager to see it happen again. As of 2015 , only 12 horses have won the Triple Crown: Sir Barton (1919), Gallant Fox (1930), Omaha (1935), War Admiral (1937), Whirlaway (1941), Count Fleet (1943), Assault (1946), Citation (1948), Secretariat (1973), Seattle Slew (1977), Affirmed (1978), and American Pharoah (2015). With the Preakness less than two weeks away at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Nyquist hopes to repeat American Pharoah’s Triple Crown victory from a year ago and this blazing quick horse is the favorite to win yet again.
The odds makers have been hard at work trying to put the right price on not only Nyquist but the entire field for the next race as well as the odds to win the Triple Crown. Currently Nyquist has -140 odds to claim the Preakness and +120 odds for the Belmont. Overall, the odds Nyquist actually completes the Triple Crown are a reasonable +200. These odds would even make some believe that the odds are good for a Nyquist victory as well as a Triple Crown repeat. These odds will vary depending on what sportsbook that you bet on.
One very popular sports betting site actually has the chances of aa Triple crown winner at +250 and the “No” at -300. This set of particular horse racing odds is set the way that it is because the Triple Crown just happened last season. So although history shows us that it does not happen too often, with the last one fresh in the minds of bettors who like to put a few bucks on the ponies, there is more reason to believe that they will take a chance and make this bet this year.
With that being said the odds makers had to keep the odds at a level that would still attract some serious action without opening up the books for vulnerability from another run at a Triple Crown.
This time of year all of the sports betting fans are all of a sudden interesting in betting on horses because all of the races get so much hype. Whether you think there will be a Triple Crown winner or not, this is the best time of the year to watch and wager on the races!
